I stand corrected. I didn't realize mileage signs had to match city or number. I thought it could match with any mileage sign. I got it though now.

Back to a mileage sign: 298 miles to Fairbanks from the US/Canada border (clearly visible as the cleared out area looking north) on the Alaska Highway.   June 14, 2001.  This one moments after Alaska became by 49th state visited.

What's the difference between the round and square?

In WV, square routes denote state highways, and circles denote county highways--backwards from how most states denote each type of route.  The county route 21 shown here, as you might expect, is a demoted former alignment of US21.  But in this case, it's not even a state route anymore; it's been demoted all the way to the county level.

WV also has fractional routes, where the numerator represents the parent route (kind of like how Washington's state routes are numbered, but vertical-style), and Home Access routes represented by a house-shaped pentagon.
