In WV, square routes denote state highways, and circles denote county highways--backwards from how most states denote each type of route. The county route 21 shown here, as you might expect, is a demoted former alignment of US21. But in this case, it's not even a state route anymore; it's been demoted all the way to the county level.

WV also has fractional routes, where the numerator represents the parent route (kind of like how Washington's state routes are numbered, but vertical-style), and Home Access routes represented by a house-shaped pentagon.

The "county route" name is a bit misleading, as the state maintains all of them. "County route" basically means "state secondary" route, just like Virginia, even down to the circular marker, and many of the numbers reset from county to county. CR 21 (the old alignment of US 21) is a notable exception, as it carries that designation all the way from Charleston to Mineral Wells.
