Correction on the title: I'm excluding the imposter x0...

In another thread, I had a guess that I-40 goes through the least metro area population of the x0 interstates (excluding I-30), so this will be to see if that's true, as well as find other population numbers that surprises me. I'll be using MSA population of all metro areas with a population of 200k or higher (rounded to the thousands place) that an interstate's family goes through. I'll start with x0s for now, then do x5s. My guess for x5s is that I-95 would be the highest, then either I-5, I-35 or I-75.

I thought I-90 would be much more than 4 million higher than I-70 as it goes through larger metros, but I guess all the mid-sized metros on I-70 adds up quickly. Also I could see I-10 pass I-80's population in the distant future given that I-10's metros are growing much faster than I-80's.

Is San Bernadino being conflated as/combined with Riverside here? And even if so, to say that Barstow is included there is... specious at best.

Yeah, I-40 shouldn't be included in the Inland Empire.

That's just an artifact of how the Feds define MSAs like the ones the OP is using. They include entire counties (in this case two of them, for both Riverside and San Bernardino), even if they are huge and include lots of lightly populated territory far from their core cities.

The westernmost ¾ mile of I-205 (CA) is in Alameda County, so you could technically include San Francisco on the list for I-5.

You missed Santa Fe, Pueblo, Cheyenne, and Casper for I-25.

You missed St. George, Logan, Pocatello, Idaho Falls, and Great Falls for I-15.

Though a lot of the metros you listed and that I left out because it didn't meet my minimum have a population between 150-200k. Might see how much more gets added to my total adding up all those metro areas.

If I-30 is an imposter, so too is I-45. Just sayin.
I added I-45 in just to see how many of the longer x5s would go through a smaller population than the imposter x5, as I-45 goes through the 4th and 5th largest metro areas in the country.

Gotcha.  Missed that portion.  My apologies.  It would likely impact more greatly the western interstates since a smaller city is more important regionally.  East of the Mississippi, the same sized towns would be micropolitan.

It would beat I-25 for sure. Possibly I-65 as well, depending on whether or not you give it credit for the entire Chicago area.

Same for Vallejo it's how MSA's are counted and how Vallejo gets counted for both I-5 and I-80. Note the one 3di related to I-5 that the OP is referring to is I-505 that's how Vallejo got counted in the OP. But in most cases Solano County, CA gets view by locals as the outer suburbs of both Sacramento and San Francisco.

I-65 goes into Gary which is an important suburb in the Chicago metro. It makes a lot more sense than I-40 being in the Riverside-San Bernardino metro when it ends in rural Barstow.
