I don't even care about the 301 shield - that county shield is an abomination.

I remember seeing these shields when I was growing up (though not too much of them, since the FHWA hounded the hell out of FDOT) and wondering 'why don't we have those in New Jersey?' (when I moved up here in 1999) I still don't get why the hell the FHWA had to make them get taken down - there was no harm in adding a little color to a route shield.

The FHWA didn't make FDOT take them down. The FHWA refused to help pay for new ones because certain colors faded faster and required more frequent replacement.

I thought the FHWA withheld funding for FDOT until they complied? I didn't think it was just for the colored US signs.

Yes; oddly, that was one of the only close-ups of "1970-spec standard" 3di US shields I could find on my site.

(Those ugly CR signs are far too common in both Lake and Sumter counties; it's almost as if every one was replaced with same awful "non-cutout and wrong font" design.)
