I am a traffic signal anti-fan.  I dislike them.  Blech!  Give me roundabouts, give me RIROs, give me superstreets, give me nearly anything else.....except an all-way Stop.

A rather old topic, but I am a die-hard signal fanatic. I am particularly interested in New York City signal equipment.

Thread looks dead. Anyways, cool "retro" assembly here. http://goo.gl/maps/p4TvS

^^ Any other heads than the one in the middle? as MUTCD mandates a minimum of 2 primary signal heads in each direction.

Old set-ups with one signal-face per direction are "grandfathered in" because towns might not have the money to double-up their signals.
Tuscumbia, Sheffield, Bessemer, and Albertville (all of these are in Alabama) still have intersections with one 4-way suspended above them.

I'm a signal fan as well. BTW, the new signal forum is called "Highway Divides".
It's all fun & games until someone summons Cthulhu and brings about the end of the world.

I also collect traffic lights, road signs, fans, and railroad crossing equipment.

I used to like New Jersey growing up as you would have many different mounts back in the 70's.  You had Irvington which used to have a wide variety of installations.  As I would visit my Aunt in Irvington I used to see horizontal mounts on double guy supported mast arms.  The traffic lights along the GSP service roads used the standard double guy mast arms, as they must of been installed by the Garden State Parkway when the road was first built.

Then you would see side mounted lights along many intersections in Irvington, especially Springfield Avenue in Downtown Irvington.  The later truss style arms were used along Clinton Avenue except at Coit Street which used side mounts.  Then the 18th Avenue/ Grove Street Intersection had two worlds with Grove using overhead horizontal mounts and 18th Avenue using side mounts.

Then the NJ State road system used both double guy and truss mast arms as NJDOT was in the process of changing out the old double guy for the newer truss arms all throughout the 70's and well into the 80's.

I got to see many combos of signals which got me into admiring them.  However, now as a grown up, where I have to drive in a city that is traffic light friendly and adding new signals by the day, I hate them now.

However, give me an interesting installation, and I will only admire the signals themselves, not their effect on traffic.
Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.

I've wondered why some of the cities in the Phoenix area choose not to use traffic signals that are similar to the ADOT signals in most of the state.
