Strange, perhaps... but, given the angle at which the roadways meet, it seems almost ingeniously efficient.

I've seen those in Omaha, Nebraska at a few intersections, like this one at 168th & Center:

They seem to like those in Brownwood.  Here's one at the main highway junction.
