Here's the monthly headline post about California Highways. As usual: Ready, set, discuss.

As noted, Tom and I just recorded the bonus ep. on Auto Trails in California, so expect that to post sometime next week.

As someone passing through Hollister on 156, I'll be glad to see that light at Union closed for a while.  That has always been a heavy bottleneck point on the existing eastbound highway ever since I've been traveling.  I was caught in a 30-minute backup at that light last Sunday which went all the way west to Old San Juan Highway in San Juan Bautista.

If I wasn't on the coast this week I would have gone to the Kings River Bridge dedication on CA 41.  I probably ought to get a couple photos the oddly absurd/long detour route signage tomorrow while I still can.

I opted to use Avenal Cutoff Rd instead of that absurd detour.  The potholes were atrocious, even for Central Valley county road standards.  Detouring to 269/I-5 made more sense than 198/I-5.

The amusing thing is that I don't find Avenal Cutoff all that bad.  Some of the one lane farm roads up in Fresno County are on my daily commute.

That said, Avenal Cutoff is being closed on 8/12 for resurfacing.

"The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District has proposed a pair of passageways across the highway in Los Gatos: an overpass for hikers, bikers and horse riders, and an underpass for mountain lions, deer and other creatures."

So mountain lions and deer are going to share an underpass? What could go wrong?

$367,591 for the North County Transit District to develop a Gender Action Plan intended to "mitigate the mobility burden" on women and gender-nonconforming groups.

WTF?

Well, it's not like they could read a sign that said "Mountain Lions - Use Overpass; Deer - Use Underpass". They share the open space, so why not the nature crossing

At least I hope you're not the type that believes the deer crossing sign is telling the deer where it is safe to cross :-)

The trouble is, the crossings will concentrate them into a narrow area. Should a mountain lion and a deer enter the crossing at the same time, I think only one will come out the other side.

But so be it. The crossings are still a good idea on balance, since they keep them all off the roads.
