(For US 222 and PA 772)  PennDOT - District 8 News: Ramp Closures This Weekend, Monday Night, at Pavement Preservation Project on Route 222 in Lancaster County

QuoteTraffic to be detoured

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that the Route 772 ramp to northbound Route 222 is scheduled to be closed this weekend at the 3.3-mile pavement preservation project on Route 222 in Manheim, Warwick, and West Earl townships, Lancaster County. The northbound Route 222 ramp to Route 772 will be closed Monday night.

Weather permitting, the Route 772 ramp to northbound Route 222 will be closed from 8:00 PM Friday, September 6, to 6:00 AM Monday, September 9. The closure will allow the contractor to reconstruct a portion of the ramp.

A detour will be in place during the closure. Motorists should take Route 222 south to Route 272 (Oregon Pike) Exit, then take Route 272 south to Jake Landis Road, turn left onto Jake Landis Road, then left on Butter Road to access northbound Route 222.

The contractor is planning to close the northbound Route 222 off-ramp at the Brownstown/Rothsville/Route 772 Exit for paving. The ramp is expected to be closed from approximately 8:00 PM Monday, September 9, to 6:00 AM Tuesday, September 10.

A detour will be in place during this closure. Northbound traffic should continue north to the Ephrata/Route 322 Exit, then return south on Route 222 to the Brownstown/Rothsville/Route 772 Exit.

Paving in the northbound lanes will continue nightly from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM. This will require nighttime lane restrictions.

This project consists of bituminous resurfacing, full-width milling, base repair, concrete patching, guide rail updates, line painting, and sign updates on northbound and southbound Route 222 from the Bushong Road overhead bridge to the Pool Road overhead bridge.

Work in the northbound direction, including the northbound ramps at the Route 772 Interchange, is expected to be completed this year. Work in the southbound direction, including the southbound ramps at the interchange, is expected to be completed next year.

Motorists should be alert and drive with caution through the work zone.

New Enterprise Stone and Lime Company, Inc., of New Enterprise, PA, is the contractor on this $8,486,591 project.

All work is expected to be completed October 20, 2025.

(For PA 718)  PennDOT - District 1 News: PennDOT Announces Plans Display for South Dock Street Bridge Replacement Project in City of Sharon, Mercer County

QuoteThe Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to view the online plans display for a project to replace the bridge that carries South Dock Street (Route 718) over Pine Run in the City of Sharon, Mercer County.

The purpose of the project is to replace the bridge while also improving safety and accessibility for pedestrians.

Information on the proposed South Dock Street Bridge Replacement, including a handout, project plans and an online comment form, can be viewed at by visiting the PennDOT District 1 website, www.penndot.pa.gov/District1 under the Design and Construction Projects link.

The bridge is located on South Dock Street between the intersection with Wayne Place and the roundabout intersection with East Connelly Blvd.

The project will include replacing the existing bridge with a concrete box culvert, as well as the replacement of curb/median and sidewalk on the eastern side of the roadway.

Work is expected to occur during the 2026 construction season.

The project will be constructed using a temporary runaround, so the roadway can remain open for the majority of the project. Construction of the proposed runaround will be completed at the start of the project and will require the removal of a portion of the existing curb and center median. It will extend through the existing industrial parking lot on the western side of the project and will include access for a pedestrian detour adjacent to the runaround.

The existing single span steel I-beam bridge was built in 1923 and reconstructed in 1990. It is classified as poor condition. Approximately 7,000 vehicles a day use the bridge, on average.

The South Dock Street Bridge Replacement online comment form will remain active through September 20, 2024. Those unable to access the information online may give feedback by contacting PennDOT Project Manager Kyle Barker at kybarker@pa.gov or 814-678-7166.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and receive public input regarding any questions or concerns with the project. It is also an opportunity for the public to review and comment on the project's potential effect upon Cultural Resources pursuant to the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation's 36 CFR Part 800 regulations implementing Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

(For PA 462)  PennDOT - District 8 News: Interim Repair Project to Begin on Route 462 Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge

QuoteHarrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that an interim repair project for the Route 462 Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge spanning the Susquehanna River between Lancaster and York counties is set to begin.

Weather permitting, work will begin Monday, September 16. This work includes repairing bridge beams and strengthening select columns on the west (Wrightsville) half of the bridge.

Vehicle, bike, and pedestrian traffic currently not restricted from using the bridge will be maintained throughout the construction period.

Long-term lane shifts will be in place. One lane of traffic will be open in each direction on the bridge for much of this project. However, there also may be intermittent single lane closures under flagging, as needed.

Boaters can avoid under-bridge work locations by following signs placed on the side of the bridge.

CriLon Corp., of Somerset, PA, is the contractor on this $910,780 project. All work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

A 10-ton weight restriction currently is in place on the bridge. The restriction was implemented last year after a routine inspection uncovered deterioration to the primary load carrying members of the open spandrel concrete arch spans along portions of the bridge.

This restriction, which was implemented to reduce strain on the bridge and prevent further deterioration, will remain in place after the interim repairs are completed.
