The biggest rivalries in the NFL are those that are played every year. I would guess that Cowboy fans view their greatest rivals as the Giants, Eagles and Commanders - and not the Texans.

Quote from: thspfc on November 11, 2024, 04:14:31 PMBy my estimation the Texans are the Cowboys' 8th-biggest rival

- Eagles
- Giants
- Football Redskin Commanders
- 49ers
- Packers
- Steelers
- Lions

You can't have 8 rivals. There's not enough hate to go around for 8 teams.

I guess I can understand the current division rivalry, but I just don't get the others on your list.

And trust me on this one:  Cowboys/Texans rivalry is pretty intense just like Eagles/Steelers, Giants/Jets, Raiders/Niners.  Jerry's World and Reliant/NRG Stadium are located less than 270 miles apart, so there will be some level of clashing of local pride.  But with the Cowboys/Texans, this one is especially heated due to the historical contrast:  Cowboys being the most established sports franchise in the NFL, and the Texans the youngest team.  The Texans have as many playoff wins in their history as the Cowboys have Super Bowl rings.  It's the classic big brother/little brother type of animosity.
I don't doubt that it's like Eagles/Steelers, Giants/Jets, and Raiders/Niners; problem is, those are not gold standard NFL rivalries.

I thought the 49ers, Steelers, and Packers connections were obvious to anyone with any historical knowledge of the sport. Throwing the Lions in there might be a reach, but it's clear that the Lions players themselves absolutely despise the Cowboys ever since their cute little trick play got called back, and their retrubution last month was merciless and hilariously disrespectful (no complaining, it was pretty funny).

The NFL Live crew find the irony in Dallas Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy's press conference using curtains to block out sunlight while addressing WR CeeDee Lamb's dropped pass due to the sunlight.

I find it funny that the sunlight has finally become a major issue after a game that the Cowboys would have lost by four touchdowns regardless.

It's funny how a stadium that Jerry Jones built and presumably helped design is now bring blsmedbas the reason why the team is sinking.

Nope, there has been complaints made about the sunlight through those windows for several years.

What idiot thought that having a stadium running east-west was a good idea? There's a reason nearly every football field runs north-south. I realize it's not EXACTLY east-west but clearly it's close enough to be a problem.

Not to this extent. Maybe the odd article here and there, but it was never a topic of discussion on every sports site and morning show.

That's only because of Jerry's outburst.

Anyway, I actually am starting to question is mental acuity. He seems to get his thoughts mixed up a lot and lashes out more than he used to.

That does tend to happen when one exceeds four score years.

I will say that as resident of the Houston area, the Cowboys-Texans game attracts an audience of locals who otherwise don't care about the NFL. The average Houstonian cares when the Texans play the Cowboys. Not so much when the Texans play the Colts, Titans, or Jags.

I was at that game. The sun wasn't an issue in my section, but I feel for those poor fans in the east end zone...

The local news anchors in the DFW area had no issue roasting Jones and Co. after that game. An enjoyable experience as someone rooting for the visiting team.

Quote from: jeffandnicole on November 12, 2024, 11:31:55 AMI don't know how big these rivalries are. When it's an AFC-NFC clash, they often only play each other once every 4 years.

But when they are within the same state -- or in several cases the same greater metro area, surely some level of local clash occurs.  Different sport, yet the Cubs/W. Sox and Yankees/Mets also come to mind.  I've been told that SF and Oakland are rival cities, so in the past I've heard that Niners fans and Raiders fans clash very hard.  No surprise that Ohio sports fans are divided (Cincinnati vs Cleveland).

I don't know about Baltimore fans vs Washington fans....I haven't heard much from when their respective sports teams face off -- Nationals vs Orioles or Commanders vs Ravens.  And nothing in Florida has suggested much of a rivalry among the cities in that state.  Surely the Missouri sports fans are or have been polarized (KC vs STL) in the past.  I'm sure if Portland had an AFC team, that vs the Seahawks could also spark a big clash between their respective fans.  What would happen if Memphis and Nashville both had teams in the same sport?  Would the state of Tennessee be divided?
Another famous in-state rivalry: Pittsburgh vs. Philly. While the Eagles and Steelers face each other only once every four years (or did every three years from 1970 to 2001), it's still a big deal in both cities, and the rest of PA as well. As for Houston-Dallas, ever since the Astros switched from the NL to the AL in 2013, their rivalry with the Rangers has really heated up. And of course, we have the L.A.-San Francisco clashes that go beyond Dodgers-Giants, as Rams-49ers and Lakers-Warriors have had their own tense moments as well. Kings-Sharks technically does not fit this narrative (as the Sharks actually call San Jose home), but I'm sure they're on the same level as the other three.

(Gentle reminder: The Seahawks haven't been in the AFC since they left to rejoin the NFC in 2002.)
Go Cubs Go! Go Cubs Go! Hey Chicago, what do you say? The Cubs are gonna win today!

AFC Wildcards- Pittsburgh Steelers, Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos
NFC Wildcards- Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, San Francisco 49ers

After the TNF game between the Eagles and Commanders, I have since changed teams on who's winning the NFC East Division (Philadelphia Eagles). Also, the Tampa Buccaneers will be winning the NFC South as their schedule is much easier compared to the Atlanta Falcons.

It's crazy how two games can completely change the picture. Last year the Eagles had a stranglehold on the #1 seed entering December, with a two-game lead on their closest competitors. Then? Week 13, loss, week 14, loss, bam, they're the 5 seed. The Packers went from being a dead 4-6 team, to a hot 6-6 team on a playoff push, to a dead 6-8 team, to 8-8 with a win-and-in against the damn Bears at Lambeau.

Now, as far as I'm concerned, Washington is only in the playoffs by half a game. 5-4 SF is currently the first team out, but they're going to overtake the Cardinals in the NFCW, making 6-4 Arizona the first team out. Washington is 7-4.

The good news for the Football Team is that they still get to play the Cowboys twice, so their record is really 9-4.

JayhawkCO

I wouldn't be so sure that SF is going to overtake Arizona. Arizona is sneaky good and the NFL's most anonymous franchise so no one notices.
