The two minute warning has strategic purpose in close games. Yes, it's another commerical break, but it's not like those would commericals disappear into the void without a two minute warning.

One thing that bothers me: if a game is claimed to start at 7:00, it never does. Baseball gets this right; while it will begin at 7:07 or 7:10 like other sports, the advertised time will also be 7:07 or 7:10, not 7:00. Why can't other sports use the real start time like baseball does?

The FIFA World Cup matches start right on the dot. I turned on a college football game and was surprised it started right at the advertised time.

If a broadcast network is showing a "double-header" or even "triple-header" of games, if an earlier game runs long, the later game may be delayed a bit so that the coverage of neither game is truncated.  Fans of the earlier game will understandably be upset if their game  is cut away from, as would the fans of the later game being upset missing the first part of their game.

See "The Heidi Game" from 1968.

If he's referring to the newer leagues (MLS and the women's leagues in basketball, soccer, and hockey) not being plural, I support the change, although I don't like [city name] FC with no other distinguishing features, nor the Red Bulls being named after a company that has absolutely nothing to do with the city.

If he's referring to the Guardians and Commanders, those are nowhere near the only name changes throughout history, and those two particular changes have good reason. Utah Hockey Club should really have been Utah Buzz, though, and the NHL should not have called it an expansion team.

The only thing that bothers me about the Guardians and Commanders is that both franchises went with the most boring possible names.  I seem to recall "Spiders" was on the table for Cleveland?  Washington Football Team was at least a uniquely amusing name.

I recall there were people squatting on the rights for the more interesting names.

I'm guessing the racist ones. :) (Note, not calling any posters racist, just the nicknames that have been changed.)

Quote from: kphoger on January 31, 2024, 04:08:39 PMI just want a halftime show that doesn't:

 (1)  make me feel like I need to scrub my eyes with soap afterward because of all the sex-charged outfits and dancing

 (2)  feature an artist who really should be on oxygen because they're over 85 and their musical prime was during my parents' youth

Sounds like you'd enjoy a halftime show by "Weird Al"

I'm a little late to this one but I'd enjoy a halftime show by a marching band, as the good deity intended.  And I'd enjoy TV showing it instead of the five Captain Obvious "analysts" blowing hot air around a table.

They could have had their mascot be a caricature of the first President and been the Washington Washingtons.

I just hope that this 'wokeness' thing blows over soon and everything can return to the way it should be.  And BTW, they are the Marquette WARRIORS.

Political diatribe aside, making a caricature out of someone's culture is not okay.

Yeah I'm a Marquette alum, and I dropped the name Warriors a long time ago. It's just a nickname. And their historic representation of that nickname was problematic.

Regardless there are reasons other than "wokeness" 🙄🙄🙄 that they dropped the name that I'm not going to get into here.

The Washingtons Dominating All Quarters is the sports headline we'll never get.

In the NBA and NHL especially, the home teams wearing the colored jerseys and the road team wearing white. I know it's been a few years, but when and why did this become a thing? I still watch a game expecting the home team to be wearing white, and it takes me a bit to realize the home team is wearing their colors. The two NBA games I watched today, Golden State and LA Lakers, GS was home and wearing colors. Yet in Denver and Phoenix, Phoenix is home and wearing white.

^^ ^^In 2004 just before the strike, the NHL did a total color reversal which still stands. The NBA was more gradual.

I have always liked the home teams in the NFL wearing their dark unis, too (listen up, Jerry . . . ) and the home teams in Baseball wearing light unis.  The light v dark thing in Basketball is confusing to me, too.

How often are the white uniforms even really necessary anymore?  The color schemes for most professional sports teams don't overlap a ton these days.

It's all theatrics; the home-team "heroes" wear a light color and the opposing "villains" have a contrasting color.
