Found this hand-painted sign in Collinsville, Alabama last week:

Cutouts in Norton, VA for VA 74 and "OLD US 58 ALT" - VA 74 was the original routing of US 58 ALT through the city before it was moved to a freeway bypass south of downtown.

I like the period after HWY. Just to make sure people understand it's an abbreviation.

It's an ODOT miracle! Earlier this year, this travesty on US 64 in Tulsa was replaced with one of the best-looking signs I've seen out of Oklahoma.

Really glad to see this get replaced, only thing is I was lowkey kinda hoping I'd be able to get a picture of it before it got replaced, oh well.

Yet they didn't touch the worn-out signs around it. :pan:

I also collect traffic lights, road signs, fans, and railroad crossing equipment.

I suspect the replacement was done at OTA's direction, who has no interest in the ODOT signs on either side.

I've been trying for years to get a good shot of this 1970's button copy BGS on I-65 near Montgomery, which is tough when you're facing the sun every darn time...

Glad to see that's still around. Managed to snag a decent photo of it myself last year:

I took some great pictures of the button copy signs at the I-44/OK 33 interchange:

Both are still in wonderful condition, and they have some of that old quirky Oklahoma road sign charm.

Oklahoma's button copy usually wasn't half bad. It was when they converted to reflective sheeting that everything went to hell.

Two lovely enamel-on-steel signs in north San Bernardino at CA 259 still in service. They didn't get the glued-on button treatment, so they still look fabulous.

I'm happy to report that, as of yesterday afternoon, this pair of vintage (and extremely worn-out) US 78 shields in Memphis, TN, still stand!

And, of course, I had to snag a photo with a southbound CN mixed freight train rolling across the bridge above the shields.

Here's one of a dwindling number of remaining recycled shields from the pre-1970s era of Québec road numbering. This one on a road junctioning QC 277 was originally for Route 54A, now part of QC 169:

Both of these are on the Newbury/West Newbury town line where South St., Main St., and Moulton St. meet. Byfield is part of Newbury.

For the second sign, GSV shows that the sign has looked like this (including the lack of replacement for West Newbury) since at least 2009.

One old shield wasn't enough, so here's a second specimen further north. This QC 277 shield was originally for Route 29, now QC 344:

I found some more button copy in downtown Tulsa! This is on the offramp from I-244 EB to 7th Street.

"Heavy Trafficway" is my new band name.
But they blew it: it's actual name is Heavy Traffic Way.

(Why anyone would choose to drive on that is beyond me.)

hbelkins

Is Heavy Trafficway a thoroughfare or a descriptive term?

And this is the first reference to "trafficway" I've ever seen outside of Missouri or the Kansas City KS/MO metro area.

No, you misunderstand.  The actual street name is [Heavy Traffic Way].

Maybe it's named for the Ralph Bakshi movie.

Out of the few times I have driven Heavy Traffic Way, there hasn't been that much traffic honestly...

But were the few vehicles you saw sufficiently weighty?

Or maybe it's the road that leads you to where the heavy traffic actually is.
