But they aren't close to a monopoly. They aren't even the largest player in the market. That belongs to Dollar General.

Interesting, given that there are a whole lot of new co-branded Family Dollar/Dollar General stores and a growing number of remodeled Family Dollar stores becoming co-branded.

Not true in this area, where the small-town grocers are still thriving. What the dollar stores are doing is cutting into sales for places like Walmart, because the dollar stores are closer than the nearest Walmart.

If "this area" is around where I think you are, I'm not so sure about this assessment.  Small-town grocers are pretty rare as is rather than a local Piggly Wiggly.

That said, it does bring to mind how Bypro/Wheelwright have changed.  Both the local IGA and Dollar store closed...

If "this area" is around where I think you are, I'm not so sure about this assessment.  Small-town grocers are pretty rare as is rather than a local Piggly Wiggly.

That said, it does bring to mind how Bypro/Wheelwright have changed.  Both the local IGA and Dollar store closed...

There are a lot of Save-a-Lot grocery stores in this area, in both county seat towns and rural areas. While they aren't locally owned, they do carry a full line of groceries, including fresh meat and produce.

Beattyville has an IGA and a SAL. So does Jackson, along with a local establishment (Jiffy Mart) that has fresh meat and a small sampling of fresh produce. Booneville has a locally-owned Shopwise that sells locally-grown produce.

The last time I was down in the southern end of Floyd County, the McDowell IGA was doing a booming business.

Depends on the situation.  Firebaugh, California (where my wife's family mostly lives( has a Dollar General and Family Dollar.  There are three non-chain grocery stores in town.  Two of the three are doing very well and have just finished recent renovations.  Doesn't hurt that one of them sells a lot of Mexican style food which isn't in competition with anything a Dollar Store sells.

St. Charles, Michigan has a Dollar General and a Family Dollar/Dollar Tree combo right across the street from each other. The FD/DT combo store was just built within the last 2 years.

Montrose, Michigan had a FD/DT combo store that closed down.

No combo stores in my neck of the woods. What do locals around those stores call 'em? Family Tree?
