I wonder whether Scott Laughton has been told to expect to be traded:

On the women's side, I find this headline (which is the URL) funny. It was put out by the league itself.

https://www.thepwhl.com/en/news/2025/march/16/new-york-seals-4-1-win-over-minnesota-at-takeover-tour-detroit-as-pwhl-marks-one-million-fans-all-time

Why? Because "New York Seals" is not their name (they're the Sirens), but it sounds like a real team name. Maybe far in the future when the city gets a second team or a minor league team?

To pretty much nobody's surprise, the Flyers just fired Tortorella. Seemed inevitable after his comments Tuesday about how "I'm not really interested in learning how to coach in this type of season, where we're at right now."

The lengths to which that dude skated on that championship from over 20 years ago is pretty impressive. He's been completely mediocre since.

I think his noteriety as a harda$$ appeals to certain owners and GMs though.

Ovechkin just surpassed Gretsky's all-time goal record at 895.

We were there Friday night to see him tie the record, but when I looked yesterday the scalpers were asking over $1000 for today. So TV it was.

The Capitals posted this tweet this morning and my immediate reaction was that they used the wrong typeface on the Interstate shields.

Stopping the game mid 2nd period for a 20 minute ceremony was honestly awesome, you couldn't have asked for a more Ovi record breaking goal then top circle on the power play  :D

Congrats to Alex Ovechkin for pulling off the impossible. I think he did the right thing by not going for the hat trick when the Hawks pulled their goalie in his record-tying game; he also did not want to do it anyway, which should prove what a classy guy he truly is.

Double post I know but the Montreal Canadiens will do the playoffs this year in the first round against the Washington Capitals. Ready for a rematch of 2010?

1995hoo

"Rematch"? There aren't too many players left on either team who played in that series. For the Caps, Ovechkin and Carlson (Backstrom is on long-term injured reserve and almost certainly will never play again); for Montreal, the only one I see is Carey Price.

But some fans still view it as a sort of rematch. Some Caps fans still haven't forgot their defeat due to Halak who goaled for the Habs back then. :-/

"Some" would include me. I well remember that, and I also remember how we weren't totally thrilled when he briefly played here in 2013–14. But to some extent, I think viewing anything that long ago as a "rematch" is sort of silly.

It's sort of like when sports reporters talk about one school's college football record against another but fail to mention that they haven't met in decades. Or another way to view it that would resonate with me, given where I went to school, would be to try to classify Duke as a football powerhouse because it has played in all four of the historic major bowl games (Rose, Cotton, Sugar, and Orange Bowls) and has won three of the four (lost twice in the Rose Bowl). While that statistic is true, Duke's last appearance in one of those bowls was in the 1961 Cotton Bowl and the program has largely been mired in either mediocrity or outright stinkitude since then.

As well as the Flyers and Penguins - two of the more successful American franchises outside the O6.

PWHL announced yesterday they're adding a seventh team in Vancouver. This might or might not be the only expansion. If it is the only expansion, the current 30-game season still works well, as each team can play each opponent five times.

Edit: Up to 8 with Seattle.

Meanwhile in Montreal, the bus system has been told they can't display "Go! Habs Go!" because "go" is an English word.

I guess that jinxed the Habs, the Capitals eleminated them and now the Capitals will face the Hurricanes in the next round.

Fun night to be at the game last night. Rod Langway high-fived me after the Caps' second goal. He was standing behind us at the time because later in the period he participated in the "Salute to the Troops" thing, which is done two sections over from where we sit.
