Spin-off companies that outlasted their parent companies

Accenture (a consulting company) was a spinoff from Arthur Andersen (one of the longtime accounting firms), prior to Arthur Andersen's spectacular downfall in the wake of the Enron mess.

EOG Resources is another spinoff from Enron, and is much more profitable than Enron was in its last two-three years.

Isn't there a store called Lawson that started out selling milk in Ohio - but is now a convenience store chain in Japan?

Lawson's was a chain of convenience stores in and around Northeast Ohio.  Their top products were dairy and deli items.  In the days when "blue laws" kept supermarkets from being open on Sundays, Lawson's, as well as other corner store chains were open.

Lawson's was bought by Dairy Mart in the late 80s/early 90s, and the Lawson name was retired.

Despite the name being resurrected in the Far East, there is at least one location in Hawaii.

This isn't surprising. Hawaii has a lot of connections to Japan.

We have a landline at work and I think it's stupid you still have to dial 1 for long distance. I often get interrupted by a recording when I call a customer, whether I dial 1 or not. The dang phone call is probably hopping a cell tower somewhere or going over VOIP, so long distance is free money to the provider.
