Quote from: kphoger on June 03, 2025, 01:10:19 PMAt our house, we're now above 3½ inches of rain since last night, as of an hour ago, and it's still coming down hard.  Weather Underground says that, from May 24 through May 30, Wichita got more than 5½ inches.  I can feel myself slowly turning into a liquid.

Carrie told me that we measured seven total inches of rain here over the week-end before Memorial Day.

We've now gotten more than seven inches just today.  She had dumped out the rain gauge last night.  This afternoon, it was already up to the brim, and the markings go up to seven inches.  3½ inches of that was in the span of 1½ hours.

Our landlords, who moved out of state several years ago, called to ask if we were flooding.  They have another rental house in Wichita, and those tenants had called to say the water was halfway up the wheels of their car in the driveway, and that the basement was leaking;  unlike our house, theirs had never leaked before today.

Curious on what image generator that is to get modern weather in the old school TWC local forecast.

https://www.taiganet.com/

I took the time to find old videos of TWC forecasts to configure the cities and maps to be an exact match to what was used in Las Vegas. You're in luck that one exists for Love Field, if you want to go the same route: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeTnMMV7ZQY

Somebody made this pretty easy; you get a whole loop complete with the cheesy music.  I guess it defaults to your location as determined by IP address, but you can change that:

The problem with this implementation is that it is not very authentic in terms of cities used and graphical appearance (antialiased fonts, animations are too smooth, etc.) Also I like choosing my own cheesy music.

Case in point, here is a comparison between an authentic WS4000, my Taiganet configuration, and what WS4000 Plus outputs:

I struggle to understand what some of the WS4000 Plus entries are even referring to. Why are there two Nellises with different temperatures? Harry Reid is what the authentic 4000 carried as "Las Vegas", so what's "Las Vegas - He"? What if I want to be jealous and/or smug about what Reno is experiencing?

Similarly, the maps (authentic WS4000 vs WS4000 Plus):

And wind direction 67.5° apart.  And one has thunderstorms but the other does not.

My guess is that "Nellis AFB - I" is Indian Springs, but that's just a guess (and the AFB up there is no longer part of Nellis; it's Creech AFB).

Oh, I agree, if you want to put in the effort to do your own custom setup that's going to be a lot better.  For something "good enough for me" that pulls current info from NWS, what he's done is, well, good enough for me.

"Las Vegas - He" must be Henderson Executive Airport, and as the site creator mentions in his Readme most of the cheesy music is copyrighted so he's created his own, but there's a whole library of samples of the authentic music here.

Probably Las Vegas - Henderson Executive Airport.

Yes, I believe you are correct:  Nellis AFB - Indian Springs Auxiliary Airfield.

And apparently, it has also moved to the Seattle area:  https://www.weather.gov/zse/ZSEStationInfo?id=KINS&tab=MTF&;

Edited to add — If you go to the [Area Map] tab on that page, you can find what they all are by mousing over each station.  For example, in case you were wondering, I found out that "Boulder City M" is "Boulder City Municipal Airport".

Some think North Texas weather is unexplainable. Let me explain it for you. May is warm and wet, and June is an extension of May. It's not till around July 4 that the switch flips and the red hot poker gets shoved.

If it's 105º+ by the middle of June, it's going to be a beast of a summer like 1980 or 2011. Not this summer, glad to say.
