I assume "Springfield MA"? Springfield VT is also on I-91, but in the opposite direction and closer. It's the 13th most populous municipality in Vermont (may be slightly outdated), so people will have heard of it especially being only 30 miles away.

Quote from: tman on June 05, 2025, 06:55:45 PMNebraska does this with "Iowa" in Nebraska City, on US 75 at NE-2:

Google Maps

There's not a great choice east of here. You're a couple miles from the river/border, and a couple more from the junction with I-29. The next town, Sidney, is over a dozen miles away, well past I-29, and is reached via a multiplex on US 275.

Sidney would work fine as the control.  If not, then just use I-29 as the control.
Probably not used because of Sidney, Nebraska, Shenandoah would be better. Almost 5 times bigger, only 14 miles further and would not be confused with Nebraska's.

Sidney NE is nearly 400 miles away, so no possible IRL confusion.  Plus, easily solved by signing it as [Sidney IA].

Except that, at the IA-2/US-275 junction, the control city is Sidney.

Pretty sure it is Springfield, MA.

I'd love to see New Jersey use 'Pennsylvania' instead of 'Del Water Gap' on westbound I-80.  I had no idea what they they meant during a roadtrip into the area a couple of decades ago.

How many junctions for Del Water Gap aren't also signed for Stroudsburg PA?

Lots of those in Canada. I've seen New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine in Québec.

It's all fun & games until someone summons Cthulhu and brings about the end of the world.

I also collect traffic lights, road signs, fans, and railroad crossing equipment.

I've seen Alaska in Alberta (even though there's both a province and a territory in-between, on the main routes between Alberta and Alaska).

Quote from: kphoger on June 05, 2025, 10:35:34 AMThere are still some instances of 'Kansas' as a control city on the Missouri side of KC.

Example:  https://maps.app.goo.gl/eWeK5jnGm2zNeECQ9

Here is another example, this one on an Interstate:  https://maps.app.goo.gl/2s7cPnL5SL4xqFFt7

And, coming from the other direction:  https://maps.app.goo.gl/JDLEMWqWM4xRoYhP9

I like this. Using Kansas as a control city would also work well on eastbound I-70 in Denver, instead of using Limon.

I think we should all have a debate about the use of Limon as a control city.

Kansas would be much less controversial, and would maybe even cause some of us who constantly fret over Limon to maybe even "get a life".  But I enjoy Control City Freak's videos, and his disgust for Limon is very entertaining.  Not sure what he would do if they really did change it to Kansas.  Hopefully he'd redirect all of that anger towards Benson, NC where it belongs.

Solve the problem in the other direction: convince roadgeeks and their friends and family to all move to Limon so it becomes big enough to be a proper control city.

I think you're overestimating how many roadgeeks there are.  And how many friends we have.

Pull an I-10 east of Denver and sign I-70 East as:

other High Plains Cities

lepidopteran

This sign before the Delaware Memorial Bridge lists just that, plus Delaware.  And on the other side of the bridge you have the unique "NY - NJ" signage.  Does NY stand for the city or the state?  (Usually, the city is abbreviated to NYC.)

There are a number of New Jersey signs, such this one approaching the GWB, or another shown here on Staten Island.

My all-time favorite - traffic entering the US in Norton, VT gets two choices on VT 114: "Maine Sea Coast" and "Florida." https://maps.app.goo.gl/u2qGZiWhiYUtYQpe9

Until recently, I-495 NB at I-90 (and probably other places) was signed "NH - Maine."

Pennsylvania Turnpike uses Ohio and New Jersey as control cities (although New York City is replacing the latter on new signs). US 202 has Pennsylvania and New Jersey around its crossing of the Delaware River. There are some signs on US 222 south of Lancaster, PA that have Maryland as a destination.

Never posted on a sign, but at the southern tip of Illinois on US 51 approaching the Cairo Bridges, IDOT has painted the Left Turn Lane "KY ONLY" and the Straight Lane "MO ONLY"

The New York Thruway (I-87/I-287) in Rockland County has several exits with just "New Jersey" as the control city.  Also, I-78 in New Jersey uses "Pennsylvania" as its control city out in Phillipsburg.
