So basically a huge earthquake off the coast of Russia today caused a tsunami in Hawaii yesterday.

The M8.8 earthquake off the Kamchatka Peninsula that triggered these tsunamis is the most powerful earthquake globally since the 2011 Tohoku earthquake in Japan (that caused the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster), and it's tied for the sixth strongest on record. Given that it was a megathrust earthquake it's straight up miraculous that the tsunamis weren't worse...granted, cities along the Kamchatka Peninsula including Petropavlovsk (pop. about 180,000) saw waves as high as 14 m/45 ft.
