Good joke, although that team died 70 years ago, with the era of having two teams in cities not named Chicago or New York coming to an end.
Go Cubs Go! Go Cubs Go! Hey Chicago, what do you say? The Cubs are gonna win today!

Also there was an Official Proclamation back in November as to the team's abbreviation on a TV scorebug, an out-of-town scoreboard, etc.  Where the Yankees are NYY, the Mets NYM and so forth, this team is supposed to be ATH.

The San Francisco Chronicle says, uh, we'll call you what we want to.

Quote from: John Shea in the SF ChronicleThe Chronicle has decided not to follow the A's guidelines and will call them the Sacramento Athletics or Sacramento A's online and in print stories. The Chronicle's sports editor, Christina Kahrl, who grew up in the Sacramento area an A's fan, signed off on the decision, along with using the "SAC" designation and not "ATH" in the standings and other agate. Other Hearst newspapers are aboard as well, a nifty decision that oozes with common sense.

What is the franchise's logic behind denying that the A's for the time being represent Sacramento?

Probably because they know ahead of time that this move to Sacramento is temporary.

I have not seen any explanation of it by management, but would say RZF has it right.  Phrasing it my own way, "Oakland Athletics", "Sacramento Athletics" and "Las Vegas Athletics" is a lot of branding switches over a short period of time, so perhaps they prefer to abbreviate it to the constant part, "Athletics", until "Las Vegas" becomes part of the permanent branding.

And none of that changes the fact that they are indeed playing in Sacramento.  Might as make the best of it rather than draw attention to the fact that the host city can't get a mention in the team name.

Today is Truck Day at Fenway Park, where the Red Sox send a truck with equipment and supplies to Fort Myers in advance of spring training. In spite of the snow on the ground it's an early sign of spring. Now if only they can put a winning team together....

Meanwhile, the Cubs are setting up shop in Mesa, where they'll try to assemble a roster that will recreate that great season of 2016 for the ninth year in a row...

Alex Bregman 3/$120 to the Red Sox.

Signed him for $10M over the next highest bidder, making him play second so Rafael Devers can continue to be terrible at third, and you roadblock a top 5 prospect at 2B that you could pay 1/50 the salary to.

I'm sometimes amazed that the Red Sox have the most world series wins in the 21st century.

Bumping this thread just to mention Devers getting traded to the Giants.

The White Sox are actually.... sorta fun to watch

They're still losing, but at least the kids have brought some life back into that hellhole (blessing from the Pope and Vaughn going bye-bye probably helped as well)
The local weatherman, trust me I can be 99.9% right!

There is some promising young pitching, but still a complete shitshow at the plate. There might be 3 legitimate major league hitters on the roster.

There's been quite a lot of controversy surrounding the Dodgers: First a National Anthem singer defies their demands that she sing it in English and does the Spanish version instead, and now they block ICE from getting into their home park. This is certainly not a welcome distraction for the defending world champions.

I don't see this lasting too long, since the NL Central is likely going to go down to the wire with the Cubs hot on the Brew Crew's tail.

Yankee Stadium and the Polo Grounds with both the Giants and Yankees hosting night games...

SEWIGuy

The New York Yankees used to play at the Polo Grounds as a tennant of the Giants. The Giants didn't like how the Yankees played the game, with their home runs and such, and encouraged them to find another site. The Yankees built across the river and right on a bluff so the Giants could see their brand new ballpark, which was larger and state of the art for the times.

This is a view from the Polo Grounds toward Yankee Stadium.

My grandfather grew up in the Bronx as a huge Yankee fan coming of age in the era of Ruth and Gehrig. His father was a traditional McGraw Giants fan who thought the Yankees were too brash. (He eventually became a Yankee fan when the Giants left for San Francisco.)

While we're on the subject of old ballparks, this is Wrigley Field without the lights:

And the sign out front (as seen in 1935) called it the HOME OF THE CUBS, with THE being substituted for CHICAGO:

Go Cubs Go! Go Cubs Go! Hey Chicago, what do you say? The Cubs are gonna win today!

What I find more interesting about the photo of Wrigley with no lights is that the bleachers in straightaway center, where there should have been a batter's eye area, were in use and occupied by fans whenever that picture was taken. I read somewhere that the last time those sections were used for baseball was when Wrigley hosted one of the all-star games in 1962, so that would help date the photo.

"That sounded stupid, didn't it?"

Can confirm this team has a different energy compared to 2024, it's actually kinda fun to watch.

Only Civale and Taylor are free agents after this season. Everybody else is back next year.
