I'm not familiar with the road, so I'll ask:  is it the kind of road where a scissor jack wouldn't even work, where you'd need something like a Hi-Lift instead?

Quote from: ClassicHasClass on September 09, 2025, 12:29:03 AMThe ranger station at Schulman Grove keeps a running tally of flat tires sustained on the Patriarch Grove road. There is an incongruous, beautifully paved section of road that runs from nowhere to nowhere as part of the alignment, sort of a Ted Stevens section, near the end of the dirt approaching the turnoff for Patriarch (the main road continues to the locked gate). Apparently a couple weeks prior to our attempt, a lady had a blowout just shy of that part and had to be towed all the way back down to Big Pine. The rangers told us she ended up with a $1800 bill for the towing alone.
What, no spare?

I just assumed there was no spare involved since it was a passenger car.  Even my new Corolla didn't come with one.

Neither did my Civic Si (2018). I had to order it as an option from the dealer, which took six months to come in.

In my case I just bought a full size wheel and spare from a tire shop.  The wheel well actually accommodated a full size spare.  I did order a factory scissor Jack which wasn't exactly cheap as I would like.

Maybe not the situation you have in mind, but sometimes a scissor or even a hydraulic jack might not work because the ground is too soft. For that scenario I bought a pair of thick plywood boards for my now-deceased 4x4 pickup track, and kept one of them for the trunk of my Forester compact SUV (going under my full-size spare, hogging a little more trunk space).
