Honestly, I wish Caltrans would do more promoting 680-24 as an alternate when busy. I've used 680 to get around many jams, and if there ever is the political desire for a continuous HOT facility, that would be the easiest place to route it.

680 sure, but isn't it pretty difficult to make improvements or additions to 24 going over (and through!) the mountains?

I'd imagine Google Maps would route people that way now if I-80 was jammed.

Google Maps and Waze generally *do* make such adjustments.  That said, during busy times CA-24 and I-680 are subject to their own areas of extreme congestion. Hopefully when the gap in HOT/HOV lane on 680 North between Livorna Rd. and CA-242 gets closed, some of that congestion will go away and this will become a more viable route. I predict that the bottleneck would then become the stretch of 680 between the Benicia Bridge and Cordelia, where it remains only 2 lanes in each direction.

Unless you included 780 in that then I wouldn't recommend that, the section between 780 and Cordelia is such a mess with only 2 lanes in each direction. Hopefully they widen it eventually when they connect the interchange to the 12 interchange.

I don't follow. How would they connect the 680-780 interchange to CA 12?

THey are doing work at the Route 12, I-80, I-680 interchange near Cordelia. It has been going on for years. See my pages on any of the routes for details (e.g., https://www.cahighways.org/ROUTE680.html )

This project and the 680/CA-4 interchange rebuild are 2 projects that I have no expectation of seeing completed any time soon.  Things have been so drawn-out and underfunded, both have involved the trickling-out of piecemeal phases over the past 2 decades.  Both are real monuments to the inefficiency of construction and the funding formulas for these improvements.

No, I get that and I've seen that work. I don't understand where 780 comes in, though.

The section of 680 between 780 and 80 is incredibly overloaded and backs up regularly, but 780 is very underutilized.

680-780-80-12 seems like kind of a roundabout path though. If you were taking 780 maybe just cut up CA-29 at that point? Probably slower though due to the density of that area. Haven't really driven there much myself.

This section has been screaming for expansion for a couple of decades now. I'm sure that a HOT lane will eventually appear here, but I don't see it happening until more progress is made on the 680/80/12 interchange project.  Perhaps my children will benefit from it one day if they still live in this area.
