Corollary being:

When you're in a hotel, "H" actually means hot not cold and "C" means cold not hot, and you get it right within about 15 seconds.

Heh. You're making me think of the time when we were at the Marriott Chateau Champlain in Montreal and Ms1995hoo turned the "C" faucet all the way to its maximum setting. It never crossed her mind that the faucets were labelled in French. She got an unexpected surprise.

There are a lot of hotels in the US where you find that H and C are reversed.  I suspect it's an inside joke that plumbing contractors find endlessly funny, similar to Lucy pulling the football from Charlie Brown.

I had a really weird hotel shower last weekend. There were two faucet knobs, one for hot and one for cold - ok, sorta normal so far.

But the cold knob turned on backwards. And the hot knob could be rotated continuously in either direction, going on then off then on then off ...

I can't say I've encountered that, although I have encountered single-knob (or single-lever) shower controls that either turn in an unexpected direction or have the hot water coming before the cold.

In the instance I mentioned, though, if Ms1995hoo had been paying more attention, she would have noticed that the one on the left (hot) said "C" and the one on the right (cold) said "F." That would have been a tip-off that something was different.

commenting on the Capitals clinching a playoff spot.

"That sounded stupid, didn't it?"

"C" and "F", obviously for "cold" and "French".
