I understand that there have been past lobbying efforts on both sides to make the crossing open 24 hours, and AB 41 is a significant north-south highway in Alberta. It would be similar to when US 191 took over S-242 north of Malta in the 1990s, connecting to SK 4.
I don't know, but it would be cool to have another N/S cross-country route. So many routes actually do go to Canada, but in the south, some have been truncated by interstates, like US-89 which went to Nogales AZ, US-85 which is a mere bookkeeping entry between Castle Rock CO and TX, and US-395 which at least made it to San Diego.

Hard to believe but there was once a time when US-87 ended at the Canadian border.

The Ghostbuster

They probably replaced US 87 with US 89 between Great Falls and the Canadian border so US 89 could be a Canada-to-Mexico US Highway. Regardless, neither 87 nor 89 should have been designated west of now-truncated US 91 (now Interstate 15) in Montana.
