Great Lakes Roads

#475
Another segment of Highway 71B in NW Arkansas will be removed from the state highway system and be transferred to the city of Springdale.

The section to be removed goes from US 412 (Sunset Avenue) to Highway 264 (Wagon Wheel Road).

This came from the most recent Arkansas State Highway Commission Meeting.

Oh goody, another business highway that doesn't connect to its parent route on both ends, They really should change the name of the highway at this point, because it's no longer a viable business highway. This could be the return of AR 471.

I-42 to become a toll road in NWA? What do y'all think?

They said "Arkansas does not use toll roads". As I understand it there is a constitutional prohibition for them. It would take a state-wide referendum to pull this off. Just because the Oklahoma part would have tolls, does not mean Arkansas can or will.
Let's build what we need as economically as possible.

Where has it been said Oklahoma's portion of I-42 will be tolled?

The Ghostbuster

Interstate 42 may have to be tolled to speed up improvements to the US 412 corridor. I don't expect Arkansas to adopt toll roads, but future Interstate 42 may be an exception.

I mean, most of the route that is already up to Interstate standards in OK is already tolled.

Right I'm referring to the parts that aren't built to interstate standards.

The article says that the tolls would only apply to new roads, and that existing roads will not be subject to tolling. A road on a new location would be wasteful, as much of the current US 412 expressway between the eastern end of Siloam Springs to the western end of Tontitown could be used as I-42. Converting this highway to I-standards would require an interchange on the western end just east of Siloam Springs, an interchange at Old Hwy 68/Fairmount Rd/County 195 and some frontage roads, a bridge or a frontage road at Chamber Springs Rd, an interchange at Kincheloe Rd/Martin Pedro Rd, an interchange and some frontage roads at School House Rd which would also serve Robinson Rd and Litrell Rd and a bridge at Wildcat Creek Rd/Taylor Rd. The road would have to be widened because the left shoulder width doesn't appear to be up to I-standards, but there is a fairly wide median along US 412, and widening it would be easy. It's already a nice road, and there is no reason to build an all-new highway that would be redundant to current US 412. If this toll road were built, most traffic would just shunpike via the existing US 412 expressway.

Driving thru Siloam during the day is getting as bad as getting from I-49 to the  Westside of Tontitown. It would shave 10 to 15 minutes off getting to Tulsa. They read to drop a spur of this proposal to Prairie Grove/Lincoln. Go check out US 62 for shits and gigles during peak times.

In Izard County, ArDOT will be doing improvements to LaCrosse Road and to be included in the state highway system.

In turn, the following highways will be decommissioned/removed from the state highway system:
- Highway 289 (all of it from Hwy 69B to the end of state maintenance in Zion)
- Highway 69B around Sage

Also, the city of Beebe wants to do an intersection improvement project at Hwy 367 (Dewitt Henry Drive) and Hwy 67 Business (Center Street)/Hwy 31 (Main Street).

In turn, the following highways will be decommissioned/removed from the state highway system:
- Highway 67B (from Hwy 367 to Hwy 31 on Center Street)
- Highway 367S

I live about a 30 minute drive or so from Beebe and I will probably stop by and check for these changes some time in the future. I don't expect these changes to be done super quickly, plus I believe that AR 13 was supposed to be truncated between Campground Road and AR 267 in Beebe about two years ago, but the signs were still put in place last I was there. From my experience, these can take upwards of a few days to a few years before signs are removed.

With regards to Izard County, I'll probably make a trip up there some time in the future, I don't know when, but I'll mention my findings later.

I noticed that US 59 & 71 have a posted speed limit of 75 north of Texarkana.  Also where the two route concurrency fully enters the Natural State, there is a Welcome sign there as well.

Doesn't the two route overlap straddle the state line hence the name State Line Avenue.  Plus AR only allows the 75 mph maximum to freeways in that US 59 & 71 is not one as its got at grade turnarounds and driveways.  So in essence, only the SB lanes would fall under Texas and the NB lanes would be under AR law.
Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.

From about Sugarhill road (AR196) to Downtown Texarkana, it does indeed straddle the states.  The part that is 75mph is all in Texas.  From just north of Sugarhill Rd (AR196) to just south of the visitor center it is all in Texas. There is a curve to the west as you go down the hill from Sugarhill road. On the NB there is a slight curve after you pass AR-108 you go back into Arkansas there. The AR 108 intersection is all in Texas.

Look at the google maps satellite view and it is clearer.

As to the traffic laws, except for signage they do it by compact on the part that is different states on different sides. MOSTLY they use the Texas conventions (and Texas pays for it) I-30 uses Texas standards all the way to Jefferson Ave.  At times the cities disagree so badly that the Arkansas Side LEOs will not go south on state line except in emergencies.  Texas side fire department does not do mutual aid in TA.

Let's build what we need as economically as possible.

I drove by here yesterday evening and did not see any changes at all. AR 367S and US 67B are still well signed. I did not drive by AR 13/Campground Road so I can't report on that yet.

AR 367s is still there in Beebe as of 04/21/2026. I'm not sure about the 367s in Cabot though.
