If I count interstates I've intersected, that's a dang wide net to cast. I definitely have never been on I-2 though.

Intersected?  If you stayed on the route you were on, then you weren't on the route that you "intersected"...

I listed all combinations in my list. It's not the answer to the OP, but it's tangential.

D'oh!!  Silly me, it slipped my mind that the eastern I-86 has a brief concurrency with I-81 near Binghamton NY.  So I've been on that stretch.  So here is the correct answer (as of now).

From home base in Maryland, approximate driving distance:

2di:  I-16 (Georgia), ~600 miles
3di:  I-676 (PA/NJ),  ~120 miles

I-385 and I-381 are both similarly close, but also untraveled (add 2-3 miles to above)

2di: I-19 ~1800 mi.

I've been on I-185, I-381, and I-385 since I first posted my response, but I forgot about I-69C.

I guess I never updated my answer in the last two years. Now it's the tiny I-110 in El Paso TX, 711 road miles from my home near San Diego. By the end of the year, it'll probably be I-27 in Lubbock TX, 1026 road miles away. The southern part of I-25 is closer, but I've driven a couple of stretches of that further north.

Closest untraveled 2di: I-39, 268 miles

Slight update from my travels:
- Closest untraveled 2di: I-73 (~400 mi from Gainesville, FL, with I-42 and I-87 NC close behind).
- Closest untraveled 3di: tie-ish between I-520 and I-526, but unless I travel I-795 FL day one of designation, that will temporarily be the closest untraveled 3di (even though I've clinched FL-9B as-is)...
I can drive 55 ONLY when it makes sense.

Closest 3di, and the winner overall for me, is I-295 (RI/MA), just beating out I-176 (PA) by about 5 miles (~125 to ~130 crow miles).

For 2di's, it looks like I-69** at its northern terminus in Port Huron, MI. (~445 crow miles)

**One could make the argument that I have been on I-69 by virtue of its concurrency with I-40 in Memphis, though it has yet to be signed in Tennessee.

I-240 in Oklahoma.

For a minute, I thought 2nd place might be I-49 because I've only been on the highway before it was designated as an Interstate.  But then I remembered one time I drove it later on.  So 2nd place is probably I-680 in NE/IA.

ETA — Well, I guess I haven't been on I-344 since it was designated in OKC.  Or I-335 at all...

I think there are only two Interstates west of the Continental Divide I've never been on any part of:

2di:  Interstate 86 in Idaho (556 miles by shortest route from Tahoe)
3di:  Interstate 182 in the Tri-Cities area (690 miles from Tahoe)

I do expect to travel I-86 as part of a long road trip this summer.

I-182, I've sort of circled around it.  I've been to Pullman for football, traveled I-90 across Washington, been through Yakima and have crossed Oregon on I-84 and been out to Wallowa Lake.  Never had any reason to drive the entirety of I-82 and pass through the Tri-Cities area though.

TheCatalyst31

2di: I-22, which looks like it's just barely closer than I-68
3di: I-394

Update since my 2023 post:

- At the time I'd traveled all 2dis but I-42 has since arrived and I haven't been on that, not even the roads before designation (like I-22).

- My closest completely untraveled 3di without a signage requirement still looks to be I-478, the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel

- I have since traveled I-795 in Maryland, which was my closest signed 3di missing in 2023.  I believe my answer is now I-680 in Ohio, which looks to be about 435 miles driving distance from home.

From Salem, Oregon:

Closest 3di: I-115. I've been to Butte, but never took the spur into downtown.

Closest 2di: I-27. Again, a close one -- I've twice driven I-40 through the interchange with I-27. I even have a photo of the signage there:

2-digit: Either I-12 or I-72, both are almost an equal driving distance apart from here.
3-digit: I believe I-220 in Jackson, MS is my closest.

If driving I-80 in the median of I-29 in Council Bluffs does not count as driving I-29, then I-29 is my closest 2di or 3di, at 200 miles away.

If that does count, then I-74 is the closest 2di at 325 miles. Either way, I-229 is the closest 3di at 230 miles.

For as many times as I go to Hampton Roads for work, I have never had any reason or taken any opportunity to drive I-564.  I suppose one could take it and not actually be forced into a gate into Naval Station Norfolk, but I guess I just haven't been motivated enough.  I usually stay at hotels either in Chesapeake or Virginia Beach, which aren't too close to 564, or at least not close enough after a long work day.

The only other closeish ones I can think of are the little short St. Petersburg downtown connectors of I-175 and I-375, and I-195 in Miami.  I drove part of I-395 once to the cruise ship port.

That's a surprising one to me.  Not only have I driven on I-35W (TX) multiple times, but I've clinched it every time except once.

The one time I didn't clinch it was when I detoured due to an overturned truck on the highway.  It's also the last time I ever drove it, as I swore off driving through Dallas–Fort Worth that day.  Since then, I've only driven through it on one round-trip, and another vehicle made contact with mine at highway speed on I-35E.
