meh.  Gas was more expensive in the summers of '08 (adjusted for inflation) and '22.

Heck, the average price of gas in March 2012, when adjusted for inflation, was $5.57/gal.

Doug ran a 2012 gas station photo on our Facebook page from Utah at the junction of US 191 and 491.  The inflation indexed price was about $5.40 for a gallon of regular.  It just struck me as a case of the more things change the more they stay the same.

Speaking of low hanging nearby significant roadways I'm looking at clinching, I have my eye on Tassajara Road for this summer.  I'm trying to get my wife to go with me since she likes hot springs.  The closest state highway I haven't finished no doubt is in central Nevada somewhere.

I'm looking at about 3350 miles this summer for a road trip that will include golf tournaments in Omaha and Boise.

At 28 mpg average, that's 120 gallons of gas.  So the difference between $3/gallon and $6/gallon is $360.

The total budget for the trip is around $3700.  Hotels and restaurants are both budgeted for more than gas, even at 120 gallons x $6.  I don't like it, but a 10% increase in the total cost of the trip isn't a dealbreaker.

On topic, I expect to clinch I-86 in Idaho as part of the trip.

In my case, both roads I've clinched in this thread in the past week are within 20 miles of my house and easily drivable in an hour. Gas being about $3.69 at the local Buc-ee's helps too. I didn't do much driving in 2022 when gas prices then were absolutely ludicrous.

It's not about clinching entire highways, just segments. In other words, how far from home do you have to go to get to a highway segment you haven't been on before?

Updated and corrected a few errors from my previous list.

2-dight Interstate:
(1) I-69, from Mayfield, KY to I-24 (184 miles)
(2) I-57, between I-64 and I-70 in IL (190 miles)
(3) I-40, from Memphis to Nashville (245 miles)
(4) I-49, south of MO-76 near Anderson (251 miles, the only portion of Missouri's Interstate system I have not yet clinched)

3-digit Interstate:
(1) I-155 (IL), north of Lincoln, IL (230 miles)
(2) I-240 (TN), east of the US 78 interchange (250 miles)
(3) I-169 (KY), south of the I-69/Western Kentucky Parkway interchange (253 miles)

US Highway:
(1) US 61, between Perryville and Jackson (89 miles)
(2) US 160, from Doniphan east to its terminus near Poplar Bluff (100 miles)
(3) US 62, east of Pollard, AR (131 miles)

State Highway: (this one was tricky. I only counted numbered routes here, would be much tougher if I included random dead-end stretches of Missouri's lettered routes even though they are technically "state highways." Still can't totally guarantee I didn't miss one.)
(1) MO 99, south of Birch Tree (81 miles)
(2) IL 3, north of Chester (98 miles)
(3) MO 51, from Puxico north to MO 91 (100 miles)

I didn't know clinching also meant having simply traveled/driven on a segment; thought it had to be the whole length for it to count.

Interstate: I-72 at eastern end
US: US 150 west of Prospect Ave in Champaign
State: IL 10 at eastern end

Think of this thread as the closest stretches of roads of a given type that you haven't driven on.

This of this thread as the closest stretches of roads of a given type that you haven't driven on.

Maybe clinching wasn't the best word. The gist of the thread was how far you have to go to get to a highway segment you haven't been on before.
