No more News Roundup or top/bottom of the hour national headlines on KNX, KCBS, WBBM ...

As an all-news junkie this is a bummer, though there will be a replacement.

No worries, the Ellisons still have plenty of other ways to distribute their propaganda.

I used to listen to their top-of-the-hour news regularly.  Commercial radio became obsolete for me when XM put up the satellites.  I do still have a bedside radio tuned to the Sacramento NPR station, and sometimes listen to their top-of-the-hour report but that's the only OTA radio I ever hear any more.  I dropped the SiriusXM satellite service a few years ago and listen entirely through the app now, either the smart TV app in the living room or phone app with Bluetooth in the car.

I also stopped listening to the big news stations (including NPR) years ago when hey got too partisan political.

I may get tired of this quickly but...for now, added the 1980s-1990s version of the top-of-the-hour theme as my ringtone for a text message.

I was a very early adopter of XM, later SXM radio, as at the time I had a statewide travel job and there were lots of places where the radio offerings were slim.

I really only turn on the AM-FM radio for local sports.  I haven't thought about "top of the hour" news updates in many years.  Too easy to get push notifications if something important happens, or to just check an app every now and then.

Here is more on Audacy's response over losing the CBS News affiliation.

Quotehttps://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2026-03-24/what-happens-to-knx-other-stations-when-cbs-news-radio-goes-away

KNX, the all-news station in Los Angeles that has carried CBS programming since 1936, posted a lengthy segment on the impending closure and explained how "KNX News is not going anywhere."

KNX was owned by CBS until 2017. The New York-based Audacy, under its previous name Entercom, acquired the CBS radio stations in 2017. KNX and the other Audacy news stations such as WBBM in Chicago, KCBS in San Francisco and WWJ in Detroit remained CBS affiliates, carrying the hourly CBS newscasts.

The Audacy all-news outlets, which reach around 9 million listeners a month, provided about one-third of U.S. coverage for CBS News Radio, the most of any station group carrying the service.
Audacy said it will find a replacement for CBS News Radio to provide national and international coverage, noting that the mission of its all-news stations will not be affected.
"The vast majority of our news and talk programming remains original and locally produced, and we are beginning conversations with other national news providers to ensure our listeners continue to have access to world-class programming they value and trust." said Chris Oliviero, chief business officer for Audacy.
Convincing the listening public and advertisers that the stations will be fundamentally the same once CBS is gone will require some effort. KNX and the other Audacy all-news stations have a long association with CBS, which launched their formats starting in the late 1960s.

Partisan? Yuppppp. I also think news went downhill when the media outlets stopped treating the news as a "public service" and started treating the news as a "revenue source", including crafting the placement of news items to appeal to certain audience demographics and the related advertising dollar. I also feel that the broadcast outlets, because of the limitations of time, only provide a high-level overview on subjects that require in-depth reporting. I feel that I get better news coverage from online news sources than I do from broadcast sources.

This is why, whenever I post a news item, I post the source name, title, and a brief summary of the news item (due to copyright reasons), and it is always accompanied by a link back to the original news article. You may not agree with the source, but at least I cited the source. Sometimes, the link to the news article isn't something I agree with, but what I find interesting.

Here is the largest non-Audacy owned station to lose their affiliation with CBS Radio News and its Hubbard owned WTOP Washington DC.

I'm guessing Westwood One News will step into the void. The Cumulus-owned news station in Little Rock dropped CBS in favor of Westwood One at the end of 2017.

I listen to KIRO FM (97.3) here in Seattle a lot, which is our local CBS affiliate. I have long enjoyed the top of the hour newscasts, starting off with the bong and that little jingle. It'll be weird when it's gone. I'm sure KIRO will immediately move the local news to the top of the hour, perhaps complete with national stories, too.

It's shutting down because the name is false advertising—if it's on the radio, you can't actually see the BS.

Sorry, this is the second time in this thread someone has said something about this (you and @NWI_Irish96 ), am I missing something? I think it was recently purchased but I'm not sure how that affects me getting my TOTH news reports.

I stand ready to be corrected. And I am not trying to be political.

While running errands, I just noticed KRLD has already flipped to ABC News Radio; it must have happened sometime Thursday (?).  There was no announcement in advance or afterward.

This report chats with 2 of the CBS Radio News anchors, and puts faces with names of others there:

This is a multi-pronged problem that has been coming for a while.

First when Entercom (now Audicy) bought CBS Radio, they did not buy CBS Radio News. It was kept as a part of CBS (and Paramount) . It continued to furnish news to many customers, but primarily Audicy.

Second, CBS radio news was mainstream. It did not follow the generally far right point of view held by MOST of radio news and newstalk.

Third, radio itself is becoming less and less profitable. The Ellisons gave a LOT of money for Paramount. There probably will not be any public service from them except when it directly favors the political beliefs of the ellison's or the regime they support.

I like TSN: The Texas State Network
Let's build what we need as economically as possible.

CBS Radio has been a dinosaur for 50 years.  CBS as we knew it back in the day ended when Arthur Godfrey ended his show in 1972, and Lowell Thomas aired his last newscast in 1976.

If they leave a hole to fill that ABC, Westwood One, et al can't fill on their own, it will be filled if someone can make money from it.  I'm not holding my breath.  In any case, no stations are going off the air because CBS Radio is finally going belly-up.

Here is one of the few places to find CBS News Radio but its in Podcast form.  Sirius XM POTUS is the other one to find CBS Radio News for the final time. please note CBS Radio News left OTA in some parts of the country and all we can do is look on the streaming side.

https://dcrtv.com/end-of-an-era-cbs-news-radios-final-newscast-airs-friday-heres-the-plan/

QuoteThe final hour of CBS News Radio coverage will have a local connection. Veteran Washington broadcaster Christopher Cruise will anchor both the 11 p.m. and 11:31 p.m. final newscasts live from the CBS Broadcast Center in New York. The 11 p.m. report will consist entirely of a tribute to CBS News Radio through the years. Another familiar local voice, Maryland-based Michael Toscano, will handle the network's final overnight shift tonight into Friday morning. For those hoping to hear the network's last moments live, options around the D.C./Baltimore area may be limited now that WTOP has already moved on. However, listeners should still be able to stream the final broadcasts through SiriusXM's POTUS channel. They have continued carrying the CBS News Radio hourly casts. And if you miss it live, DCRTV plans to post the audio from the final broadcasts afterward.
