The long awaited...and dreaded...full closure of the I-376/Parkway East bridge over Commercial St. for +/-4 weeks will commence this week.

https://www.post-gazette.com/news/transportation/2026/07/05/parkway-east-closure-commercial-street-bridge-replacement/stories/202607050050?fbclid=IwdGRjcAS3weFjbGNrBLfAyWV4dG4DYWVtAjExAHNydGMGYXBwX2lkDDM1MDY4NTUzMTcyOAABHho48XLd1wiGX8jxd0FSKLtbni1Gafj28QdTX3M7-obbfxLdRiSdyQb-MPYp_aem_vOwKXFo6Iz_NtzdcnPvDzg

Unfortunately, there are little to no high-speed detours around the impending mess to get from downtown Pittsburgh to Monroeville -- more specifically between Greenfield and Swissvale.

The new bridge is pretty much built and ready to slide into position, once the old I-376 bridge is removed.  We'll just have to see if PennDot can get this done as promised within 28 days or so.

Guess there will be a few more "Arrows" to follow in order to get to Kennywood (IYKYK).

Good Luck, Pittsburgh!

I hit a paywall. Is there another way to read the story?

^^ Wow, that is twice in one month where I have linked a story that I was able to see without a paywall, but by the time anyone else gets to see it, the walls go up.

And I have hit my share of paywalled articles as well through the years...

PA 28 to the PA Turnpike is a decent alternative, although you do have the section where you have to use PA 910 and Freeport Road to connect between the two because there's not a direct interchange. It adds about 11 minutes (and tolls) compared to an I-376 routing.

I'm assuming it's because of Frick Park below that PennDOT didn't just have the new bridge permanently be on a new alignment through here?

PennDOT - District 11 News: I-376 Parkway East 25-Day Closure Begins July 10 in Pittsburgh, Edgewood

Judging by Google Traffic this morning, the Steel City seems to be adapting smoothly.  No backups at the Swissvale or Squirrel Hill exits (the closure points) or the Wilkinsburg exit.  Of course it's the down time twixt Indep. Day and Labor Day.  How well in advance was this closure publicized?

The closure actually starts at 9 PM tonight.

PennDOT should've told Google.  The broken line and micro- do not enter sign were showing on Google's map.

Someone with more technical expertise feel free to correct me here, but I don't think there's any way it could have been on a new alignment without impacting the approaches to the tunnel, which was probably environmentally and logistically a non-starter.

Very well. PennDOT did a good job with this IMO, but I am interested to see how the local vs. long-distance detours work in practice: will both be signed? Will the "local traffic only" exits be enforced? etc.

Looks like they could build a new bridge just to the north, but that would mean realigning and rebuilding about 3,000 feet of the highway and acquiring about 10 houses.
