Kroger deathwatch

Kroger may be the next big chain to fall. It's really gone downhill lately.

There are several Krogie-Wogies near me, and lately they haven't even been carrying many of the items they used to carry. I have to order many of my groceries online now. It bothers me, and it costs me money. The location closest to me has really gotten bad.

In places where there's any competition at all, Kroger is going to get utterly stomped.

The fact that they're losing so much business to something like Amazon though is what really bodes ill for them.

Considering Kroger is my closest grocery store and my family's pharmacy, I hope this doesn't happen.

We don't have any Kroger-branded stores in the DC area, but we do have some Harris Teeter locations and apparently that chain was acquired by Kroger in 2014.

Not a single Kroger anywhere in Corpus Christi, nor RGV area, nor in Laredo.  So we will certainly not be affected there.  By the way, I had to do a Google search and the closest to South Texas is in Rosenberg just outside of the Houston area.
We are located so far south that we're not even considered "The South"

Despite click bait headlines about losses to Amazon, which are certainly limited to particular items, Kroger, the nation's largest pure grocery store, and second overall to Walmart, is a incredibly healthy company.  It, again, exceed estimates in the most recent quarter.

Some of the headlines are born of the fact that as a unionized company, its routine closures of underperforming stores make the news, where other store just close, as Kroger has to negotiate worker's situations.

Nothing to see here, move on.

No way Kroger fails. I will say that the King Soopers stores that are by me have definitely had more challenges lately. The other day, there were zero produce bags anywhere in that section and there have been multiple times lately where I went to buy Greek yogurt and that section looked like the Covid-era egg section.

Well, let's all bear in mind that Tim's source for this claim is that his local store stopped carrying some of the stuff he likes.

Going to Kroger used to be a fun experience. In the past couple years, it's gotten to be agonizing.

Neither Carrie nor I think grocery shopping anywhere is a fun experience.  That's why we do it together:  to share each other's misery.

But we shop at Dillon's, which is a Kroger store, every week, as we have for the last 17 years.  And the fun-ness of the experience has not changed one bit in all the years we've been doing so.  It's just a grocery store, same as always.

I'm not at all worried about the Kroger by me. It's the busiest Kroger in Michigan outside of Metro Detroit. There is only one Kroger in this area. It's not located real close to a Meijer store but is about a mile or so from a Walmart Supercenter.

Maybe at former Kroger locations that have become Spirit Halloween stores...

Kroger is drawing competition from Publix in this area, but from what I hear (having never set foot in a Publix), Publix is a lot more expensive than Kroger on base staple items.

How Kroger compares to Target on grocery prices is also something I know little about, as there are no Targets within 75 miles of me and when I'm in Target country, I don't shop for groceries there.

Price-wise, the way I understand things, and not knowing where one would fit Target into this mix, it's Walmart < Meijer < Kroger < Publix.

In my general vicinity, the only places where Walmart Supercenters face any competition from Kroger are Richmond, Winchester, Mt. Sterling, Morehead, and London. Hazard, Paintsville, and Pikeville don't have Kroger. Jackson, Whitesburg, and Manchester don't have Walmart Supercenters; they only have "regular" Walmarts built in the 1980s.
Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

When Kroger opened a store in the Charleston SC area about 1980 when I was 10, it was so much better than existing stores at the time (piggly wiggly, Winn Dixie, BiLo, and Doschers) it was like going to Disney World. They did not however stay in the area all that long, though.

It was about another decade before the area got a Wal Mart or a Publix.

In my area, the gold standard for supermarkets is H-E-B, but it is at least a 15 minute drive from me. Usually, I'm just order the pre-packaged stuff and have them load it in my car via the app.

The nearest Kroger isn't all that great.

Target is stupidly expensive compared to either cheaper stores (Walmart) or better grocery stores (Wegmans) around these parts.

At Target you're paying the "I don't want to be seen at Walmart" tax.
