I just got back from a trip to NJ & NY and I was wondering.....what does the outline of the New York state shield represent? I tried to find the answer online but couldn't. Looks like some colonial related design??

And as far as NJ...just an observation: They put state and US shield with the black background on their overhead signs. Never seen that before. I think it would look cleaner if they just put the shield without the black background, maybe as a cutout (like in California).

I never knew what the shields represented either until I looked closely at a NY welcome sign. Most of them have the state shield on it, and a few of them actually have the outline around the perimiter of the shield making the same shape as the ones on their state highway signs. Keep a look out for welcome signs.

As for NJ, I like the black background. It's unique... well, as unique as it can get being that NJ still uses a generic circle!

The New York symbol is the outline of the "excelsior" picture. It's on the NY State Police arm patch too. You might find it on a NY State government website.

The shield of New York is a simplified version of the central device on the State's flag:
