I-96 in Detroit

Just as it approaches Detroit, I-96 abruptly jogs south at its junction with I-696, then turns east at the junction with M-14/I-275.  Something I've always been curious about:  was I-96 always planned to follow this route?  Because it looks the M-5 freeway stub may have been planned as I-96, but something (NIMBYs? Money?) stopped it.  Also, I seem to remember seeing maps where I-96 duplexed I-275 on the N-S section.

Also, was there any thought given to having I-96 follow the M-10 (once US 10?) freeway into Detroit instead?  Looks like a more direct route, but how good is this freeway?  Would it be interstate quality?

Kind of a random question, I know.  It's just one of those quirks on the map that I've always wondered about.

The interstate yellow book map for Detroit has I-96 using the MI 5 corridor:

I-96 was actually routed on the Farmington Bypass in 1962. The original plan was to have it follow Grand River all the way to Downtown Detroit. Work started in 1969 on the southern portion, which got all the way to Davison/Fullerton. But there were Neighborhoods that lobbyed against it tearing them apart. So MDOT change the route to follow Schoolcraft Ave and M-14/Plymouth Rd. They finished the Jeffries Freeway in 1977, and routed I-96 onto I-275 and then onto the Jeffries. Former I-96 became M-102 until 1994, and then M-5 of today.

The Lodge isn't up to Interstate standards, especially south of the Davison. At one time, it was signed BUS SPUR I-696 from 1963 to 1970. Then it became US-10's new route until 1987, when US-10 was truncated to Bay City. It changed into M-10 of today, but there was no plans to sign it I-96.

I think the Lodge Freeway should be one of those freeways that needs to be rebuilt. I wonder what the price tag would be to build the Lodge to Interstate standards. I always had this fantasy of extending the Southfield Fwy even more southwards to I-75 and build the existing Southfield to Interstate standards and make the the whole thing I-875 or I-394. I would have I-875 be cosigned to M-10 to end at I-696. Probably would not happen , but I think the Detroit area freeway system would be much  improved.

MDOT's already saving up $1.5 Billion Dollars, but that's going to be used to redesigned the Ford Freeway. They just rebuilt the Lodge a few years ago, and as for the Southfield, that will never happen (Blame Allen Park)

Okay, what did MDOT do to the Lodge Freeway? In terms of restructing it; is it going to be the same type of makeover that I-196 is going to get in Gd. Rapids this year?

By checking the map ajfroggie showed, I-75 would had taken the Lodge freeway/Northwestern highway and what's became I-696 would had use 8 Mile Road corridor.

I'd say a little less than I-196, but they worked on the whole length.

My understanding is that, when the "Fix on I-196" in Grand Rapids is completed, it will very much resemble what M-10 looks like now. :-)

Really, perhaps M-10 should be an interstate 3di.

Doubt it. Some places are not up to interstate standards.

Didn't MDOT rebuilt that freeway a few years ago? :hmmm:

Actually, it was in a PBS special about Detroit, and I almost missed it!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Michigan is the only state that has Business loops or spurs for the 3dis. I-196 has 2 in South Haven & Holland and think there still is a Business 196 in Gd. Rapids. That would be pretty cool if you could upload that Business 696 shield; even I always thought US 10 was the Lodge from the very beginning.

Here's the beginning image, I'll have to rencode the show, but volla!

Yeah, there's still BS I-196 in Wyoming and Grand Rapids. (It's completely signed using BL shields though, even though it's a spur.) There's also BS I-375 that's unsigned in Detroit that connects the south end of M-10 with the south end of I-375 along Jefferson Avenue.

There are other BL/BS 3dIs out there. BUS PA-60 is now BL I-376, for instance.
