I've done the San Jose to Portland trip many times in 8-9 hours.
Take the road less traveled.

Back when I was about 23 .... hopped in the car in Detroit at Noon on a warm May day.

Turned into a spur-of-the-moment Detroit-Cincinnati-Louisville-Evansville-Indy-Detroit drive that got me back home around 3 AM.

When I lived in Atlanta, I came to MS to visit my mom for a week. On the way back to Atlanta, I decided to go down to the Gulf Coast, then over to Mobile, up I-65 to Montgomery, and then I-85 to Atlanta. That added about 150 miles to my trip.

Most of my spur of the moment trips involved randomly driving to another city to see a concert or play. Almost all of these happened when I was in college.

The longest three:

-Lynchburg, VA to Norfolk, VA for a Bright Eyes concert (with a dip down into NC just because)
-Lynchburg, VA to York, PA to see a friend in the play Man of La Mancha
-Harford County, MD to Houghton, NY to see a friend in the play You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown

Mike and I really should try to do more spur of the moment day trips that cover a lot of mileage.

Once I drove up to Sacramento from Santa Clarita on a Friday night, unplanned. Another time I was in Bishop and decided to drive US 6 to Utah. First section was from Bishop to Tonopah (overnight there), then Tonopah to Utah via US 6 and back to near Lancaster, CA in a day.

Back in the mid-1990s, long before I ever went on line, heard of the term 'roadgeeking' and known of anyone else into this strange activity, I hopped into my car about 8:ish one morning and drove from my home in Appleton, WI to Hannibal, MO and back in one day, retuning a couple of hours after midnight.  Southward, I went via WI 26 to Janesville, Rockford, Normal, Springfield, refueling at Jacksonville, IL.  The return route was via I-172, Macomb, Galesburg, Quad Cities, Dubuque and Madison.

Does the time last month when I got stranded in the snowstorm at the Charlotte airport and had to drive the last leg to Daytona Beach count?

Otherwise it was a few years ago with my now-ex-wife... We semi-planned a trip from Bellingham around the Olympic Peninsula the night before as we were falling asleep, and I was pleasantly surprised when we woke up in the morning and decided we did in fact want to take it.

When I was in college, a good friend of mine and his friends who I did not know needed a ride to Panama City Beach, Florida (from Penn State) for spring break THAT DAY.   I guess their original ride had fallen through, and they knew I was crazy enough to take a 1000 mile road trip spur-of-the-moment.   I remember thinking the draw for me was that I would be able to get some counties in Florida's panhandle... :-D   We left about 3 hours after they originally asked me...

Luckily for me, my only original plan for spring break was going home for a few days before a job interview.   As long as they promised we could be back home in time for that, I was GOOD-TO-GO.   I remember one of the dudes almost got left down in FL because he was told the departure time and when he wasn't there 10 minutes before, his buddies had no sympathy for him.   He showed up with 3 minutes to spare!

Oh, I miss college!
