Was the sign already on the ground or not?  The news broadcast failed to mention that detail.

Yes, the sign was already down and had been for a few weeks.

Bad form on CTDOT. Everyone knows if a sign is on the ground for a week then it is for grabs.

When does it go from 'stealing' to 'picking up litter'?

Is this the same story that was mentioned by MikeTheActuary in the Connecticut News thread on November 06, 2025, 06:25:47 PM?

This is what happens when you let kids get away with stealing stop signs and street blades while they're in college.

Have they tried "That's not my truck" as a defense?

This is better than the Griswold cover over Westfield,  NJ on the Garden State Parkway in Clark, NJ to read the Lampoons Vacation series lead character.

Yes, but the link came from the local CBS affiliate, as opposed to the FOX station seen here.

For food, there's a five minute rule.  For road signs, there's a five day rule?

Some litter is best picked up at 3:30 am.

To tackle this, UF has banned possession of anything that LOOKS like a road sign in the dormitories unless specifically approved by the housing department (which usually they won't...). When I went to UF, I learned that the hard way with my (blatantly obvious prop) lookalike Speed Limit 55 sign... got it all sorted out in the end, but even my RA was completely caught off guard by the rule change.

It's proportional to mass.

For food, it is too, but inversely proportional.  Enchiladas are less than five seconds, candy bars are five minutes, Pringles are more than five hours.

Wonder if they would accept a manufacturer sticker on the back, with purchase receipt from the manufacturer, as proof that it's not a "real" road sign... Signs by Jake has sold more than one Texas FM sign with the route number being a college student's graduation year for use as a dorm decoration.

What do you think was the first thing I showed them?  Other colleges in FL do allow such proof, but apparently someone faked a receipt and a credit card record the year before.

Had to go to the Ombudsman and Housing Director to sort it out after UF general counsel apparently ruled that the mere appearance of a violation is enough to be in violation of such rules... I was eventually allowed to keep them but the fight was not worth it... they changed the rules again the next year to require pre-approval for certain decorations... (which too was selectively enforced...)

EDIT: They recently clarified this rule even further. Anything that looks like an MUTCD sign is prohibited. I'm 50% sure this was due to the fact that I referenced said manual when giving my case...

QuoteUF Housing Community Standard 2025-2026 Rule U.17.D

D. Road signs or public posting signage including but not limited to restroom signage or wet floor signage is prohibited in resident rooms/apartments. Please review the U.S. Department of Transportation Official Road Sogn Database.

Yep that typo is in the official document... https://housing.ufl.edu/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/25-26_HRL_CommunityStandards-New-FontWeb.pdf

Let it be known that if this ever happens with an SBJ sign I will personally call the general counsel myself and tell him he's an idiot.
