Hi everyone!  I'm sure a lot of you already know me from MTR and such, but for those who don't, I'm Mike and I'm currently living in Washington, DC, and from Long Island originally.  I've been a roadgeek (and really an 'any form of transportation' geek) since I was 10 years old, although I was absolutely positive that I was "the only one" until I discovered the predecessor site to www.nycroads.com when I was 17.  I've taken the hobby a step beyond most in that I chose to make a career out of it.  I'm currently working for a private consulting firm in Virginia, and I got my CE degrees from Duke (undergrad, structures) and UVA (grad, transportation).  I'm also a technical committee member on the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

My fav. roadgeek things are freeways/Interstate highways, urban transportation, and signs (mostly the green ones).  I didn't even know this forum existed until recently, so here I am!

Me too - and IIRC, you were one of the main people who got me to switch over to CE!  Good to have you over here.

Glad to have you aboard Mike!

I'm going to call this a "re-introduction", as I registered and introduced myself about 2 years ago but never really posted much after that due to some other personal commitments.  This time, I think I'll stick around, since I feel a little "out of the roadgeek loop" lately.

Two things I should add to my original introduction...

1) I've played a big role in writing the Virginia Supplement to the MUTCD over the past year, along with many other dedicated people from a joint VDOT/consultant team.  The final version should be released sometime later this summer, pending formal adoption by the Commonwealth Transportation Board.

2) Add "toll roads" to my list of "favorite roadgeek things".

Hey Mike, glad you were able to make it over!

I hadn't looked at the Welcome board in a while and missed this thread. Obviously I had encountered you in some other places, though I don't post on MTR (just lurk every once in a while). I recalled you went to Duke but didn't realize you had also gone to UVA. A fine combination, I must say, as I did the reverse (UVA undergrad, Duke afterwards).

"That sounded stupid, didn't it?"
