Quote from: JayhawkCO on March 05, 2025, 10:38:24 AMGraham crackers were invented by a pastor that thought the bland taste would reduce teen boys' need to masturbate.

Yes, and those influenced by Graham included one John Harvey Kellogg.  You may have heard of some of his products.  He too believed that a "simple, pure and unstimulating diet" would quench man's unwholesome sexual desire.  This is why, for example, Corn Flakes and Grape Nuts are rather bland—and why John had a falling-out with his brother when the latter began selling a product similar to Corn Flakes but with added sugar.

If you've never read about Kellogg and his Battle Creek Sanitarium, then you've missed out on a fascinating slice of American history.  (Teaser:  yogurt isn't just for oral consumption!)

Somehow that teaser does NOT make me want to seek out the story.

It's basically just an older version of today's recommended practice of taking probiotics if you're on an antibiotic.

Louis Spohr.

Even if you're a fan of classical music, I'd say there's a halfway decent chance you've never heard of him.  This, despite his wide regard as one of the greatest living composers (if not the greatest) during his own lifetime.

Texas 'goalpost' shield assemblies.  All other states should use these.

They are one of the things Texas does that I actually like. They have many other creative uses besides just shield assemblies, as well—one that comes to mind is using one to simultaneously display a city limit sign and a speed limit sign. Or being used to support a sign with an especially long city name so that they don't have to drive two poles into the ground.

Sometimes you'll see them where one post is displaying signage in one direction, and the other is displaying signage toward the cross road.

The one downside they have is sometimes they seem to become unmoored somehow and the wind blows them so they're not facing the intended direction anymore. That can be confusing if it leads to an important junction sign facing the wrong way.

Another state with a fun shield assembly practice is Missouri. Theirs have always kind of reminded me of trees.

Old US 91 in Arizona and Utah. Very cool old alignment, just happens to have the bad luck of not being quite as cool as the freaking Virgin River Gorge that replaced it.
