I heard somewhere that I-84 is being dropped from the NYS Thuway Authority's maintenance. Is this true?

I believe I read many months ago that that whole transfer of a bundle of toll-free roads (Interstates 84, 87 north of Albany, 287 in Westchester, 684....any others?) to the Thruway Authority that was done in the early '90s (it was a Cuomo administration trick* to balance the budget by getting those roads off the state's budget) had been undone.  Can't remember where I read this; could have been this or other forums, Wikipedia articles on the roads in question....

*and I'm not bashing Cuomo.  I'm a Democrat.  But facts are facts.  Or at least 15-plus-year-old memories of things read in the New York Times are 15-plus-year-[etc.]

That bundle was only I-84 and I-287.  And yes, I do remember reading that I-84 is now with NYSDOT.

Officially yes but technically no.  NYSDOT has had jurisdiction over I-84 since 2007, but they have been contracting with NYSTA for maintenance.  According to both the Poughkeepsie Journal and the Times Herald-Record, Thruway maintenance ends and NYSDOT fully takes over on 10/11.

I'm pretty sure the last time I drove to Montreal (2006) there were Thruway logos on the mileposts on the Northway (the segment of 87 from Albany to the border).

I've noticed in some places that newly installed Thruway shields include I-84. I guess those are going to have to be replaced AGAIN.

Also, each mile marker, I believe, features the Thruway logo along I-84. Those were installed only a few years ago as well. Those are going to have to be changed too.

Another job well done by New York State.

All right, now I can't find any support on line for my memory about the Northway.  Perhaps I'm mistaken.

As someone who's spent a lot of time on the Northway and follows the local news here, I am pretty confident that NYSTA has never had anything to do with I-87 north of the Thruway interchange.

Perhaps you're thinking of some news stories a few years ago where there was talk of trying to raise revenue by sticking some toll booths on the Northway.  If I remember right, the idea was to try to hit the commuters coming down from Saratoga County, who get a free ride into Albany, unlike those of us who live in the Mohawk Valley and need to take the Thruway.  I haven't heard anything about it in quite a while, not that it was ever likely to be approved anyway.

Photos I post are my own unless otherwise noted.

I thought I remembered seeing Thruway logos on the mileposts.  I must be mistaken.  It occurs to me now that it might have been mileposts with little Interstate shields (as opposed to the kind that just have the word "mile" and the number) - those would have been a novelty for me then, as from 1995 to 2007 I didn't drive much (living in the city without a car); borrowed my Dad's car for that Montreal trip.  Obviously, I can tell the difference between a Thruway logo and and Interstate shield - I'm saying that seeing any sort of symbol on a milepost would have been unusual for me at the time, so my memory may have sort of run them together....

Most of the NYSTA mileposts on I-84 east of the Taconic could use to be replaced anyway. The logo was little more than a faded white circle on many of them.
