I see on I-40 sign creators copied IDOT format with Exit numbers lol!

This stretch is mixed with some using traditional tabs and some like this.
Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.

I thought you might be interested to see a 360ยบ view of the drive on the newly-reopened US-321 between Hampton, TN and Boone, NC following damage from Hurricane Helene in September 2024:

There were also some really great videos about the work recently by Road Guy Rob and Baker's Construction.

US 64 through Macon County in Western Nc is part of the 98 mile NC Waterfall Byway.  The specific section of 64 from Highlands through  the Cullasaja Gorge is home to many waterfalls including five that are pretty accessible from the highway itself.

While looking around different places on GSV, I see that there is a replaced mileage sign at the beginning of I-40 north of Wilmington.

I had not viewed that area in the last couple of years as the last time I viewed this area the mileage sign had Benson (🙄) and Raleigh only.  I wonder how long it will be before this sign is pilfered.
I don't need a GPS.  I AM the GPS! (for family and friends)

I miss the big fat lettering for the distance signs. This condensed typeface is ok, but it's a little less commanding than the awesome traditional font used.

Quote from: jcil4ever on September 13, 2025, 04:52:35 PMWas driving around along US-158 yesterday between Gates County and I-95 and saw that the new bypass of Garysburg and Weldon has opened. NCDOT has aspirations to widen all of 158 from 95 to Murfreesboro, but this is the only funded section.
...
I was back in the area, if you're curious about the progress of updating the signage for 158 and friends on 95. Spoiler alert: not much progress. None of the exit signs have been updated and I only saw one set of new supports installed north of Exit 173. More highlights in the video description:

As @Mapmikey pointed out, signage approaching NC-186 on 158 westbound is still flipped:

At least it's correct on the reassurance shields after the intersection:

I noticed several signs along the new roadway were missing their cardinal directions, so perhaps incorrect directions were a frequent issue for this project...

The BGS on I-95 have been updated to show the new routing of US-158.

NCDOT has announced they are launching a new version of their DriveNC.gov traffic website on May 27 (notably after the Memorial Day holiday):
https://www.ncdot.gov/news/press-releases/Pages/2026/2026-05-20-ncdot-launching-improved-traveler-website.aspx

The website will feature a 'fresh-looking map.' Hopefully that means the information presented will be updated and/or corrected more frequently than present. For instance, US 311 is still signed along with I-74 through Guilford County. The map still features US 17 on I-140/NC 140 around Wilmington, I-74 is shown on the Maxton Bypass and it took several months after the final section was opened for I-295 to be shown as complete around Fayetteville.

From the press release:
The new features include the ability to:
  • Sign up to receive email alerts of traffic disruptions on any customized route or area;
  • View messages currently displayed on overhead digital highway signs; and
  • Watch live video from 1,100 highway traffic cameras.
I had always wondered why NCDOT did not provide live video. If they were using the 1999 platform, then I completely understand why they stuck with still shots. :D

Mergingtraffic

I'll be taking a trip to NC and SC is a month. There seems to be so much. But more than I'll have time for.

I'd like to get some shots of completed but not yet open freeway segments. I know there seems to be alot.
Or
"Future" signage or signs with "blank spots" for future interstates.
Thanks in adv !!
I only take pics of good looking signs. Long live non-reflective button copy!

According to NCDOT, the new site will go live after 10 AM tomorrow. Guess the question is how long after 10 AM?

The site was open as of 11 when I logged in. The live video is a great feature and you can view it in full screen. You can now watch construction projects, like the I-40 widening in Orange County, live. They also have increased the number of traffic cameras, however most of the new ones I clicked on, like along the Winston-Salem Beltway, are not available yet.

There are still map issues. No more US 311 on I-74, but I-74 is shown along the completed part of the Beltway, and the unopened part, which is shown as complete. I-74 is also now signed now along US 74 from the western end of the Laurinburg Bypass to Boardman. No more US 17 on I-140, but I-42 is signed all the way from the east end of the Clayton Bypass to I-95. The site now uses Google Maps, so, they have the same problems of not displaying concurrent routes of the same type. I-74 and US 74 are shown, but where it is I-73/I-74, only I-74 is shown and where it is US 74/76, only US 74 is shown. The opened part of the Shelby Bypass is signed as Bypass 74 and I-26 is signed from I-240 to the TN border.

Seems to use the same platform that FL, GA, LA, PA, NY, and a bunch of other states use. I like this version FAR better than what was there previously.

Edit: interesting, they seemed to be jumping the gun on some things, such as referring to sections of future interstate highways by their final name (I.e. I-26 North Asheville, I-74 on US-52), but not done so on some other routes (I:e. I-42).
I can drive 55 ONLY when it makes sense.

NCDOT has made a spreadsheet available with the Prioritization 8.0 statewide mobility scoring results. This is for projects going into the 2028-2035 STIP. Twenty-five highway projects were selected for funding in the statewide mobility category. The highest scoring project was for widening I-40 west of Asheville, but constructing with toll lanes.

The Ghostbuster

I tried clicking on the file. It would have opened in Microsoft Excel, but it asked for connect.ncdot.gov credentials (username and password). Is there another way to access the information?
