When I-105 was not yet a freeway. In August 1988 the Century Freeway was not opened and was a bunch of bridges being built across CA 1.

When I-15 had a barricade across the freeway at CA 60 directing SB motorists to choose either EB or WB CA 60 as the freeway south of it to I-215 was not yet completed. This was August 1988 as well.

In fact at Devore ( where both I-15 and 215 split coming down from Cajon Pass) being I-15 was not yet a through route, I-215 had San Diego as one of its three control cities at the time with straight through I-15 having only Los Angeles ( because of I-10 WB interchanging later) to support AZ and NV using LA as control cities to copy the defunct US 66 & 91 controls when I-15 & 40 replaced both historic highways.

I've seen a few other stations that kept their non-backlit signs around longer. Of course, a few of those didn't survive as gas stations for very long. One example is this ex-Sinclair Station on former NY 27A in East Moriches, New York.

I remember when the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel was tolled and two lanes as the current EB roadway was being constructed.   Also between 4th View and today's I-564 in Norfolk on I-64 was not yet open to traffic.

I-564 was VA 170 and a two lane road with I-564 being under construction.

I remember when VA signed mainline routes around cities with business routes posted with a By- Pass banner. It was confusing at Accomack, VA on US 13 to see three US 13 bannered routes on one assembly at the intersection near Onley, VA.

Quote from: roadman65 on March 05, 2022, 09:58:09 AMWhen cars had an option of manual or power windows.  They used to charge way more for the latter and most were standard in only Lincoln's and Cadillacs cause they were upscale autos and a crank wouldn't fit the model.
My late-father's 2000 Toyota Tacoma 2WD PreRunner had manual windows, and I also used to own a 1994 Plymouth Voyager for 1 3/4 months that had them. When I was buying the Voyager, the used car dealer reminded me of the fact that they weren't power windows, apparently because he wanted to see if that was going to be a deal breaker over whether I bought it. It wasn't.

I just went on a road trip in a 2014 Silverado that has roll-up windows. It was previously a field vehicle for a highway engineering firm.

I guess I'm too old because I still remember this from around 1990 or so:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mU2rpcAABbA

Perhaps the greatest commercial in television history:  United Airlines "The Speech" -- it strikes a universal chord of personal, face-to-face contact that has faded away since settling for phones, faxes, e-mail, exacerbated by the further advancement of telecommunications like Skype and FaceTime.  All those other means should be a supplement, not a substitution for in-person interaction.
We're so far south that we're not even considered "The South"

In 2006-2008 our Dodge Grand Caravan which we drove around the southeast to quiz bowl tournaments had only roll up windows. The radio had AM Stereo though! It was like the cheapest trim.

AM Stereo is another thing that most if you're under 35 or 40 don't remember.

Outside of the very major markets AM radio is basically useless anymore. Charleston is a top 80 radio market and we have 1 viable AM station. And it has 1 local daily show and the rest is right-wing talk.

Every other AM has at least an FM translator attached to it. In the 90s I remember AM stations even in smaller markets had decent listenership because of Rush Limbaugh and the dawn of sports radio.

When I was growing up my dad probably listened to AM radio at least 2/3 of the time, perhaps 3/4.

Rothman

Hm.  I seem to remember our old Dodge Caravan only having the pop-out windows behind the driver and front passenger.  Finger-pinching manual pop-outs.

Unfortunately those translators are often low-power, which probably works fine for locals sitting at home with a radio (but who does that anymore?), but which doesn't work for people on the road, and is irrelevant for streaming.

When IHOP was signed ( and referred to) as the International House Of Pancakes.

My cousin and I were discussing that last week.

I think the poster is meaning the "colonial" styled spelled out logo from the 1960's, back when all the IHOP's had the tall, steep roofs.

As to the roofs, you mean like this one in Ballston (which has been there at least since the late 1970s)?

Well, that old 'A-frame' IHOP is still there on E Washington Av (US 151) in Madison, WI.

But it also long ago dropped the 'International House of Pancakes' moniker.

However, it still has that title of the sign on the front side of their building.)

Exactly.  At least where I grew up (NEOH) IHOP vanished from the region as Bob Evans came to town and Perkins was expanding.  Pretty much of the tall blue-roof buildings were razed for new retail space.

Ouch.  We still have a bunch of those old bandages.  They are probably generic.  And really old.

And you had to be careful to hold the wrapper & string tight on one end to avoid pulling out the string leaving the wrapper un-opened.
