Forgotten signage!
« on: March 21, 2014, 07:14:07 PM »

Driving along US 371 in Louisiana, between Coushatta and Minden, I turned off onto a parish road to photograph a parish shield - something that's very rare in Louisiana. When I photographed the back of the shield, I noticed that the street sign for US 371 was LA 7, a road deleted long ago. What makes it even more interesting is that you wouldn't think US 371 was created in the 90's... All of the signage for US 371 uses the older 1961-style markers, and the state highway shields for cross streets are green and white 1970-style markers.

It seems like this part of the state has been untouched. Every parish road has a pentagon, directional signage for minor state highways had older designs that haven't been used in 30 years or so, and the green and white shields outnumber the black and white ones by a majority. Below are some GSV snapshots to show you what I'm talking about!

Older directional signage - LA 786 at US 371. http://goo.gl/maps/o1ZC5
Parish shield - LA 507 at PR 314. http://goo.gl/maps/PX2lw
Green and white assembly - LA 788 at LA 514. http://goo.gl/maps/1vKQ0
US 371 shield - 1961-spec! http://goo.gl/maps/gJIOw

Any other sections of parishes where roads are left untouched by signage updating?

By the looks of the Google images, not only has LaDOTD forgotten, but the Google car hasn't been back in 6 to 7 years.

BTW, I noticed just east of the US 371 shield link, at the corner of 371 and LA 788, the intersecting road across 371 has a left-side Stop sign (as well as the US 371 <=> assembly on the other corner), I guess that was some sort of visibility exception.

As for the topic, I'm sure I've seen not-so-updated or gone-off-and-left-behind signage over the years, but of course, no camera with me at those times, and the brain cells seem to be replacing themselves with dust bunnies of late :D (or :-( ?) .... One I do remember, a historic section of US 79 in east TX visible from the current US 79 had for a while a black-on-white "historical marker on the (direction, couldn't see that from a distance) one mile" sign that TX used to have.  I was amazed something that big wasn't noticed and taken down (and replaced with the current version of the sign on the current US 79 alignment).  Eventually (as of the last time I was through there ages ago), it was taken down.

This sounds like the road geek version of landing on the Jurassic Park island and finding the "Lost World" with all the dinosaurs.

I've found two Federal Aid markers in Florida that were completely covered with old vines and weeds. I keep a pair of gloves for an emergency tire change, et al, so they came in handy when it was time to break out the camera.

One thing about Louisiana though - our districts are set up very weird. Red River Parish, and Bienville, are on the border between Districts 08 (Alexandria), 05 (Monroe), and 04 (Shreveport). This might explain the outdated signage, but it doesn't bother me one bit!

In fact, there is a sign for the Friendship (community) Fire Tower on LA 4 between LA 9 and Jonesboro. The fire tower has been removed about 30 years ago, but it's still signed as a point of interest!
