US 30 - Mansfield, OH
« on: May 12, 2014, 10:30:45 AM »

http://www.dot.state.oh.us/districts/D03/Pages/RIC-30-Major-Rehabilitation.aspx

Here is the ODOT page for a planed project to modernize the oldest section of the US 30 freeway through Mansfield, OH. This would be from SR 309 to Fifth Avenue, and involve replacing old pavement & bridges, widening shoulders, adding lighting, and modifying the interchanges at SR 39, SR 13, SR 545 & Fifth Avenue, with a projected construction start date of 2016. There are several interchange alternatives, and it will be interesting to see which ones they go with, especially for the 13/545/5th Ave area.

I've always liked driving this part of 30 and those interchanges, as it's a neat look back at how freeways were designed in the 50's, and I believe this is the oldest section of freeway in north central Ohio. So it'll be sad to see it go, but I can see why it needs done.

I was surprised to see the "weave" between the Trimble onramp and 309 offramp westbound mentioned as a problem.  Driving through there semi-frequently, I have never noticed a problem...the weaving is worse eastbound where there isn't a lane to handle it.

It will be nice to finally have the rest of the surrounding road match the newer viaduct in width and quality.  It always seemed out of place sandwiched between the much older sections.

This is well to the east of the thread's subject, but are there any plans to ever extend the US 30 freeway in Canton, OH east of its long-time terminus of Trump Ave. S.E.?

Let's just go ahead and make US-30 a coast-to-coast interstate and be done with it already.

Not really. There is a study on that corridor on ODOT's site somewhere that I can't find right now. One of the alternatives is to build a new freeway to OH 11 north of Lisbon, but the general consensus is to do spot corrections on the route between Canton and Lisbon to resolve safety and sight distance issues. I remember seeing some curves being flattened in the proposal as well. It generally has a low VPD but a higher crash rate than state average.

ODOT does have a project to extend the US 30 freeway east to SR 44 by East Canton lurking in TRAC Tier II but it is unfunded through 2025.

East of SR 44, the plan is spot upgrades as Sherman said. There is a report of suggested improvements at http://www.dot.state.oh.us/districts/D11/Documents/US30Docs/2015-11-11%20STA-COL30ReportFINAL.pdf.

I just recently drove US 30 from Canton to Lisbon.  I don't think that it needs a full highway to Oh 11 yet.  While it's a somewhat busy 2 lane highway, and the highway just ending at Trump Ave looks a bit dopey, there is still not that much traffic on that road.  I think spot improvements would work just fine.

What about building a 2-lane limited-access roadway off the end of the Trump Ave. stub? Are traffic counts too low for even that to occur?

The plan is to eventually extend the freeway to SR 44. It's on ODOT's priority list but has no funding.
