A major first step in revamping the Interstate 80/I-680/State Route 12 interchange was taken Monday morning
Next to a bustling I-80 and Green Valley Road overcrossing, local city, county, regional and state government representatives gathered in the windy and cool morning for a ground breaking on a major project designed to reduce congestion and improve safety for more than 150,000 motorists who travel daily through the interchange.

But  lets hope this will be the last time we have structural issues on our roads.

This is pretty big. I-680 would eventually be realigned to meet I-80 at a new point, directly opposite CA 12 west.

A subtle benefit to the new 12 west/680/80 interchange: along with the existing widening project for 12 between 29 and 80...providing an alternative for East Bay/South Bay folks to get to Napa without having to go through Vallejo and the collection of stoplights through American Canyon!

As someone who takes the 680 north to 80 connector about once a week - a ramp with a bit of a downhill run and little superelevation - I am already curious as to how that specific movement will be improved with the new construction.

As a side note, the California 12 Jameson Canyon Segment between I-80 and SR 29 is now four lanes wide, and the newly relocated and improved truck scales along I-80 near the I-680 interchange have opened:

QuoteCaltrans, the Solano Transportation Authority and the Napa County Transportation and Planning Agency today (9/3/2014) celebrated the completion of the much-anticipated State Route 12 Jameson Canyon Road Widening Project, which doubles the highway width from two to four lanes along the six-mile route from State Route 29 in Napa County to Red Top Road near Interstate 80 in Solano County.

"Truckers, businesses, and motorists will all benefit from this highway improvement project, which eases traffic congestion and makes the route safer for everyone,"  said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty.

State Route 12 links the Napa Valley, Sacramento Valley and several Bay Area counties, and widening it will reduce traffic congestion for about 35,000 motorists who travel SR-12 daily — and enable emergency responders to reach their destination faster.

In addition, a new six-mile-long concrete median barrier was constructed in the center of the highway to increase safety. The new safety feature will save lives and reduce injuries by preventing vehicles from drifting into traffic coming from the opposite direction.

The $127 million project received $55 million from Proposition 1B, a 2006 voter-approved transportation bond. To date, more than $17 billion in Proposition 1B funds have been put to work statewide for transportation purposes.

"Caltrans is committed to improving mobility throughout California,"  said Caltrans District 4 Director Bijan Sartipi. "This commitment includes partnering with local transportation agencies to provide new solutions for North Bay commuters."

The upgrades on SR-12 in Jameson Canyon are part of an ongoing effort to improve the transportation infrastructure in Solano and Napa counties. In June, Caltrans, the Solano Transportation Authority and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission broke ground on a project that is making major improvements to the Interstate 80/Interstate 680/SR-12 interchange.

Last July, a new $100 million truck complex opened along eastbound Interstate 80 near Fairfield in Solano County. The state-of-the-art facility fast-tracks inspections for more than two million trucks annually that travel from the Port of Oakland on I-80 through Northern California. QuoteOverhead work recently completed on the Interstate 80/Interstate 680/Highway 12 interchange project marks a major milestone in the first phase of construction, the California Department of Transportation announced this week.

Preliminary overhead structures were installed earlier this month for the new Green Valley Road overcrossing over I-80, requiring overnight closures of the freeway.

That portion of the interchange project will provide motorists on Green Valley Road with a new four-lane overpass over I-80, replacing the old two-lane overcrossing. ...

Ground was broken for the first phase of the project in June 2014. About 75 percent of the work should be complete by the end of the year [2015], a Caltrans engineer estimated in March. The first phase should be complete by December 2016 or a little sooner depending on the weather, he said.

The second and third phases address relocating I-680 to the west so it connects with the western interchange with California 12.

Only the first couple of phases have been designed. Overall, this project needs money to see it through to completion.

Andy
