Looking south along U.S. 240 (Md. 355 today), Wisconsin Avenue at Md. 410 (East West Highway).

I recall at one point U.S. 240 Alt ran along what is now the Capital Beltway between U.S. 240 and Md. 193 (Connecticut Avenue), Md. 185 now.  It was built as a four lane parkway in that stretch in the late 1950's, open for a year or two, then closed to be reconstructed into I-495, which resulted in U.S. 240 Alt following Md. 410 east to Md. 193, then south to D.C.  I do not recall it [U.S. 240 Alt] having been posted in D.C. on Connecticut Avenue, N.W. (U.S. 240 was posted on Wisconsin Avenue, N.W. in D.C.).

The 1956-58 Montgomery County maps show the piece of beltway that opened first was unposted MD 810 (1950s county maos from the state archives are marked up in a way that tells you which state routes were posted at that time...

One thing I noticed is the spur highway from just west of MD 193 (present day MD 185) down to MD 410. When was this dropped from consideration?

This was an effort by Maryland SRC (and maybe M-NCP&PC and Montgomery County too) to hasten the construction of a freeway or maybe a greatly upgraded parkway through the Rock Creek Park stream valley in D.C. out to the Circumferential Highway (consider what the Rock Creek Parkway looks like south of Connecticut Avenue, N.W. as far south as the Kennedy Center).

Never seen that spur on a map before, but I recall reading about it in a Washington Post article from about the same time.
