I think the January 2021 letting may set a record for pure signing contracts in a single KDOT letting--I count four signing & delineation (non-freeway) and one sign truss replacement.  The KDOT project numbers for the first four (KA-4745-02, KA-4746-01, KA-4748-01, and KA-4748-02) also come out of the same KA-474X-XX block as a number of other pure signing contracts in recent lettings.

There's also major signage work included with the US 169 reconstruction (which, BTW, was originally scheduled for letting in October. I don't know if KDOT received no approvable bids or if they simply re-scheduled.)
Peace to you, and... don't drive like my brother.

73-105 KA 5891-01 includes the full-on specifications for the standard Kansas truss gantry, which is fascinating, since I've always liked the design of it. However, I have an engineering question–the plans show the truss sections being bolted together as kind of an arch with the high point at the middle, which is described as "camber". Obviously, this arch is not obvious on an installed gantry. Is this upward arch to compensate for the weight of the signage, so that the panels will cause the gantry to sag in the middle, and appear to be level when under load? Or is this arch simply exaggerated in the plan sheets and is so small that it's not noticeable to the naked eye from ground level?

Taking your questions in order:  Yes, and camber is also a feature of bridge girders.  Yes, I believe the plan sheets exaggerate somewhat--I've never seen it that obvious on a brand-new truss prior to installation of signs.

Awarded bids for January have now been posted.

Quote from: J N Winkler on December 21, 2020, 09:29:13 PM
I think the January 2021 letting may set a record for pure signing contracts in a single KDOT letting--I count four signing & delineation (non-freeway) and one sign truss replacement.

And the same contactor was awarded all four of the non-freeway signage projects. :D

The February 2021 lettings were paused for 48 hours due to the possibility of rolling blackouts in Topeka. Bids are now scheduled to be read on Friday, February 19, and it appears that the bids submitted prior to the decision to postpone the letting cannot be accepted and the contractors must re-submit their bids.
Peace to you, and... don't drive like my brother.
