CBS Los Angeles: Cathay Pacific Flight Traveling To LAX Makes Emergency Landing In Aleutian Islands

A Cathay Pacific Boeing 777 bound from Hong Kong to Los Angeles International Airport has diverted to a U.S. air base in the Aleutian Islands after smoke was detected on the aircraft.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says Flight 884 declared an emergency and landed early Wednesday morning at Eareckson Air Station in Shemya, Alaska.

I wonder what will be involved in getting the passengers and plane on their way again in this sort of situation.  Fly in a repair crew with spare parts if needed, buy fuel from the Air Force?  Fly in a relief cabin and flight crew?  If the original plane will take a long time to diagnose and repair, fly in a different plane?

The original plane was considered safe to continue and went on to Anchorage, where a replacement plane picked up passengers to continue to LAX.
