Thunderstorm and a downpour coming through!  First rain in a few weeks.
Thunder getting farther away now.

My family in Puyallup was making it sound like quite the storm, was it pretty epic?

Well, for us here in Ellensburg, some areas lost power. Our block in particular was out from about 10:00 PM until about 4:30 AM.

It was pretty impressive, especially for the Pacific Northwest that doesn't get many thunderstorms.

My house didn't lose power, but we rarely do - our area is supplied from a couple of directions on the grid.

Amaury

We also rarely lose power in thunderstorms, and if we do, it's usually for a very short period. I'm not sure if our block (or grid) lost power due to the thunderstorm itself or due to a pole fire somewhere in the city that was caused from the thunderstorm. The city had to de-energize two additional feeders, thereby causing additional outages—intentional in order to extinguish the fire and then work on repairs and restoring power—including CWU.

Power Outage
Tonight's storm has created power outages in areas of Ellensburg. Crews are responding to a pole fire first that requires the City to de-energize two additional feeders to put the fire out and repair. This will cause some additional outages, including CWU. Crews will then work on other locations. There is currently no estimated time of restoration. Some traffic signals are out of power. If signals are not functioning, proceed with caution as if it is a 4-way stop. Updates will be provided when available.

12:50 a.m. update:
CWU is back in power at this time. Crews are working on restoring power to the Brooklane, North Alder and Vista Road areas.

1:06 a.m. update:
Power has been restored to North Alder, Vista Road and Brooklane areas.

5:02 a.m. update: Power has been restored to all customers. If anyone is still having power issues, please notify Kittcom.

An estimated EF1 tornado touched down in Ayr (about 20km from where I live) on Saturday morning. Thankfully Kitchener didn't seem bad, just some on-and-off rain, though we still received a tornado warning on our phones.

Currently it's a cool 14C (58F) and overcast. The coming weekend is supposed to get hotter, reaching into the upper 20's.

Quote from: ZLoth on August 19, 2024, 08:55:12 AMDallas hit 104℉ yesterday which makes it the hottest day this year, and that isn't even factoring the "Feels Like" temperature. The forecast high for today is 105℉. At least we're not seeing the run of hot days that we had last year.

That sounds like a relatively unremarkable summer considering the highest days of the year at the Metroplex averages out to around 107 degrees.  So if the highest day this year is only 104 F (40 C); yeah we had it easy this summer in Texas (especially compared to last summer, which was almost at the borderline of blazing).  The Metroplex also averages about 28 days per year of triple-digit heat and looks to be on pace to average so far this year.
We're so far south that we're not even considered "The South"

Today is the first day of 105℉+ for this year. Compare that with 26 days of 105℉+ for last year. And after the expected 100℉ tomorrow, the forecast calls for the high temperature in the upper nineties.

In other words, the current weather is extremely... unremarkable. No records are being broken... thankfully.

Looking at the NWS forecast for Donner Summit on I-80 (elevation about 7200') later this week...the S-word, in August.

QuoteThursday Night  A 10 percent chance of snow showers after 5am. Mostly clear, with a low around 37.
Friday  A slight chance of rain and snow showers before 8am, then a chance of rain showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 49.
Friday Night  A chance of rain showers before 2am, then a chance of rain and snow showers. Some thunder is also possible. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 34.

Any snow would not stick to pavement at this time of year.  It's flakes flying around in the air that melt on contact.  The higher surrounding mountains could get a light dusting though.

Here at Lake Tahoe level the forecast high temperature for Friday is only 55°F.

Bobby5280

Here in Lawton our high temperature today was 112°F. That's actual air temperature, not a heat index value, reported from the weather station at Lawton Fort Sill Regional Airport. It beat Lawton's previous record for 8/19 of 110°F (set last year). We were at 111°F yesterday (which beat another daily record from 2023).

A "cold front" is supposed to move through the area tonight. Our forecast high tomorrow is only 102°F to 105°F. Might have to wear a light jacket.

We're having pretty heavy showers right now, but the storm is moving from east to west, which I've never seen since I've been here.
