Honestly, I know you guys are in the south, but I cannot believe all the school cancellations. We've had a foot in a single night before and still had school the next day. In fact, I don't ever remember closing* for less than a foot (unless temps fall below -25 with wind chill, which is an insta-cancel).

Y'all have plows. We don't, for the most part. Probably the majority of the roads around here that aren't state highways are still very much not recommended for use after last night's snowfall, which was about an inch. Very little of that melted today; it was sunny, but windy with a high around 25. The wind chill was 4 when I attempted to go outside to grab lunch (I say "attempted" because all my local takeout places were closed). And yes, schools were closed today and will be again tomorrow.

Also ridiculous in my books.

East Coast folks think the South can't handle snow.
Snow Belt folks know that neither of the above can handle it like we can :pan:

The low in Eastland, Texas was -3 this morning.  It was the first time any place in the Fort Worth NWS office's area had below zero temperatures since 1989.

This. I don't really think it's worth it for Southern DOTs to spend tons of money on snow equipment, like massive amounts of salt, *extensive* fleets of plows, etc, and Southern residents to spend money on snow tires, chains, and all the other snow stuff, for something that happens at most two times a year. We've only got a little of that. As a result, the roads will remain slick and icy for a day or two, which means school will be closed, things like buses full of kids on all that ice poses a real safety risk.

Portland is also like the South except the people here don't know how to drive in it. If there is an ice threat, school closed.

Judas Priest, it's cold down here on the Space Coast! We dropped below freezing early this morning and it's currently 36 degrees outside. Had to turn on the house heat and plug in my oil-filled space heater in my office to get warm. Tomorrow doesn't look any better.

Well, this got interesting...
Quote from: Portland National Weather Service
The core of cold air aloft associated with this system will move
onshore this afternoon and evening. The 00z/06z GFS convective
indices and NAM Bufr soundings show marginal instability moving
inland as 500 mb temps fall to -32 to -34 deg C. Past experience
suggests this may be a bit overdone, but even -30 to -32 deg C would
be enough to produce some weak instability with surface temperatures
in the upper 40s. Decided to add the mention of thunder inland this
afternoon and evening as a result. With freezing levels lowering, any
heavy showers or thunderstorms have the potential to produce small
hail; we have already had spotter reports of BB to pea sized hail
from the thunderstorms along the coast early this morning. If enough
sunbreaks occur to trigger strong updrafts at the surface, the
low-level shear profile appears favorable for some longevity to any
cells that develop, and a couple stronger cells with slightly larger
hail, gusty winds, and perhaps even a funnel cloud cannot be ruled
out today. Convective allowing guidance seems to suggest at least
isolated convection is likely this afternoon in the Willamette
Valley.

The final little morsels of last week's snow met their demise yesterday as the warming trend culminated in a high temperature near 70. Not quite that warm today, and there's a front coming in bringing rain and maybe a few storms this evening. It'll cool us off a bit and usher in some actual normal late-January weather with highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s.

It just started hailing. And there's still a little bit of snow on the ground.

I'm fairly certain this is the first time I've seen hail in January.

Going to guess he's somewhere near me (in which case, the answer to your question is yes). Here in the snow belt, it's 50 degrees and raining  :pan:
