Basically I'm debating of blowing out the day with Bryce and Zion Canyon to possibly loop to Capitol Reef and back via UT 12.  If that's the case I would probably skip Cedar Breaks...which the weather might dictate anyways.  Might be nice to see the Grand Staircase instead.  Whole idea here is something that doesn't require me to fly or rent a car.

Forgot to add that this would be the first time that the wife and 9 year old will be going this deep out into the desert with me.  If the weather is good it will be a Challenger trip as well but that is going to require a bike in the trunk for my daughter to get up to Bodie.  I'll probably spice this up a little bit with more railroad, mining and old road alignment stuff as a I go.  They both want to see the Stratosphere in Vegas for some reason and I might have to side trip to the Hoover Dam which won't be a big deal...figure the Pat Tillman Bridge will make that quick stop.

-  Since I despise doubling back I'm considering following Lake Mead up to Valley of Fire State Park.  Trying to get a run in this day is going to put me on the road at 9 AM instead of my customary 5-6 AM.  This shouldn't be a problem considering this isn't a very long day.  St. Thomas basically is above water these days and I'm not sure how accessible it will be by car...or foot but I know it's out there.

Day 3
Start:  Hurricane, UT
End:  Green River, UT
Route:   UT 9, US 89, UT 12, UT 24 and I-70
Distance:   356 miles
Drive Time:   7.5 hours
Site Time:    7 hours
Sites
-  Grafton, UT ghost town
-  Zion National Park
-  Bryce Canyon National Park
-  UT 12/Grand Staircase National Monument
-  Capitol Reef National Park
-  Goblin Valley State Park

-  This year I'm trading Cedar Breaks and the San Rafael Swell for Capitol Reef, UT 12 and Goblin Valley.  I'm just hoping there isn't fog this year at Bryce Canyon and I'm REALLY hoping there isn't any early snow that shuts down UT 12.  I've been leery about UT 24 ever since 2013 when I got some bad 87 octane at a Sinclair in Torey I want to say....that was nerve wracking beelining it to Green River that afternoon and flushing the tank out with 89 octane.  Definitely looking forward to seeing some high Plateau on the Grand Staircase.

-  Basically I'm looking at hitting both the Island in the Sky AND the Needles District of Canyonlands.  I might be able to convince myself to take a side trip up to Thompson Springs if I have the Challenger....that would be really cool to get some Plum Crazy Vanishing Point photos...Cisco is a little far off track to add that.

-  Basically herein lies an opportunity for the Moki Dugway and Natural Bridges National Monument.  I've been down the Dugway before but I think it will be HIGHLY amusing to have my wife and kid think they are on a perfectly normal state highway only to have it suddenly change to a crazed dirt road traversing a cliff...even if it's only for 3 miles.  Granted I'm going to be heading to my brother's in Prescott but I'm going to stop in Williams since there are some sign shops I know that have authentic stuff and to head up to the Grand Canyon the following morning.

Day 6

-  Basically this is kind up in the air on HOW to get to the Grand Canyon.  I might like a morning run while the family units do their thing with overlook on the south rim.  Conventionally this would basically mean just a straight shot up AZ 64 but I might be convinced to take the Grand Canyon Railroad.  The road to Prescott is going to be AZ 89A since it would be a crime to miss out on Sedona and Jerome.  From here it will be a week with family with some excursions out in the Bradshaws on dirt bikes.

Day 7
Start:  Scottsdale, AZ
End:  Barstow, CA
Route:   AZ 89, a crap ton of Old US 66, I-40 and CA 58
Distance:   503 miles
Drive Time:   9
Site Time:   4 hours
Sites
-  Old US 66

-  Basically the road is the destination from just west of Ash Fork all the way to Ludlow back in California.  Neither the wife or kid have really been on much of 66 besides Hackberry....so it will be educational to say the least.  Sitgreaves Pass just got a repaving recently so I'll be interested to see what their reactions are.  Should be an easy day since it's all old desert roadway.
