Route numbers changed, then changed back

I wonder how infrequent (or otherwise) this occurs.  Michigan has a least 2 stretches of highways in which this has happened.  The 1st one is M-46 from Cedar Springs to M-37.  It was M-46 and then redesignated M-57 before being changed back to M-46.  The 2nd is M-21 from Flint to M-13.  It later became M-56 before being redesignated M-21 in  the mid 1980's. :coffee:

I-40 in Greensboro, NC last year was moved to bypass via the Urban Loop after the SW portion opened and I-40 in Greensboro was renamed I-40 Business; however, due to the lost of federal funds and confused drivers in September of last year I-40 was moved back onto its former alignment in Greensboro even though it took until last summer to redo the signs though

At one point briefly in the 1930s, the Bayshore Highway in the San Francisco area was mainline US 101, before it was transfered back to El Camino Real with the Bayshore as Bypass US 101.  Three decades later, the Bayshore Freeway (primarily the same alignment) gained the mainline US 101 alignment.

IIRC, Route 2 along Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles predates US 66 (as well as succeeding it, once 66 was truncated).

Route 11 predated US 6 and US 66 being extended/realigned in Los Angeles as well; at times it was co-signed, at times it wasn't.  (Not sure if it qualifies since I think it remained along that corridor, as opposed to Route 2 being shortened in the 1930s and then returned to its old western terminus in 1964.)

Route 1 was legislatively returned to 19th Avenue/Park Presidio Boulevard in San Francisco in 1968 when I-280 was rerouted from that north-south corridor to the diagonal Southern Freeway routing that had been Route 82 (and previously part of US 101?) but I don't think Route 1 ever was removed from signage on that route, instead being co-routed to the Presidio (with 280 remaining unbuilt and thus unsigned north of the current end of the Junipero Serra Freeway).

OK-22 swapped between two alignments in 1934, 1935, 1936, 1939, and 1946, with the other alignment being variously SH-22S or SH-299 (which later became SH-78).

Not a Route number, but Exit 119A for I-20/59 near Fairfield, AL used to be for Lloyd Nolan Pkwy.  It was changed to Richard M. Scrushy Parkway over 10 years ago.  It was changed back to Lloyd Nolan Pkwy a few years ago after Scrushy went to prison.

when I-70 was built through Columbus, Ohio, US-40 was moved onto the freeway to encourage drivers to take the new road.  After several years, the US-40 designation was moved back to the surface streets.

I believe Ohio did something like this statewide. ISTR the old alignment temporarily carried a designation of OH-640 or some such.

I-95/495, Wilmington DE.  Became I-895/95 while 95 through the city was being reconstructed, then flipped back.
US 117, NC.  Went back to the surface road once it was complete (freeway became I-795).  AASHTO said no, 117 has to stay on the big boy road.  Not sure this one's 100% resolved yet.
And of course, many instances where a US highway was moved onto a freeway while the Interstate system was being constructed, only to be moved back once the freeway opened.  One near me is US 130, which was moved onto I-295 while that was being built (and one piece still multiplexes).

Those parts carried the OH-440 designation.

1969: I-84 east of E. Hartford becomes I-86
1984: I-86 reverts to I-84 (most famous of these in CT)

1948: US 44 rerouted along Wilbur Cross Highway to Willington; replaces CT 74 eastward to Ashford. Leftover US 44 becomes US 44A.
1982: All changes rolled back. US 44A becomes US 44 again. CT 74 regains mileage it lost from US 44.

1952: CT 126 becomes part of extended CT 63 (at least in highway log; haven't seen in photos or maps)
1953: never mind.

1973: SR 614 in Groton becomes state route 319.
1973: designation withdrawn because of local protests.

1941: CT 80 east end moved from Deep River to Old Saybrook
1967: CT 80 east end moved back to Deep River, replacing SR 426/SR 636

1926/7: US 1 takes inland route through Old Lyme / East Lyme
1950: US 1 moved to new expressway
1976: US 1 moved back to original route, replacing CT 51

Ontario King's Highway 85 became King's Highway 86, and then became 85 again. lol.

PAHighways

PA 18 was moved onto now Interstate 376 between the West Middlesex interchange and the end north of the I-80 cloverleaf in 1970 and moved back to its current alignment in 1978.  During that time, the original/current alignment was designated Business PA 18.

Part of SR A1A's original 1946 routing was through Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral, what is now NASA grounds, etc. A 1957 map shows SR 401 from SR 520 (Cocoa Beach) up through Cape Canaveral to its present northern terminus at the NASA Gate. When the Bennett Causeway was built, SR A1A was routed back up what was SR 401 to cross over the causeway.

There are probably a couple others.
So many roads...so little time.

That's ok.  Because 16 years later one of the Unsigned SRs (SR 611) in my hometown of Stafford was upgraded with that designation and became CT 319.
So far it has stuck and hasn't caused any protest nor have any angry mobs with pitchforks and torches stormed the ConnDOT building in Newington to get it changed back yet... Groton's loss! lol  :-D

I remember that!  I never researched when PA 18 was moved on/off the former Exit 1.  Thanks.

I should have noted that SR numbers are not signposted in CT; SR 614 looks like a local street (though it's state-maintained). Residents preferred not to advertise this route (with a signed route number) to non-local drivers who might be interested in taking it. My guess is, this is not all that uncommon.

US71

Not quite the same, but when US 71 (now I-540) was rerouted between Fayetteville & Rogers, the old highway became AR 471.  Two years later, it was re-designated as Business 71.

In 1988, New Mexico changed many of its route numbers to eliminate state route concurrencies - even very short ones. One of the casualties was NM-176, which had a short jog with NM-8 near the town of Eunice in the far SE corner of the state. So the segment on NM-176 from Eunice east to the Texas border became NM-234, where at the state line it intersected ---

wait for it ---

TX-176. (Why didn't they change the west half of the road?!)

A couple of years ago, the state performed a rare undo of that numbering by redesignating NM-234 as NM-176 again. Still no concurrencies - NM-8 was cut back to where it intersects NM-176 west of Eunice, and the north half of the loop through town designated NM-207 was given a new designation because there would have been a concurrent segment with NM-176.

There are still several other places where New Mexico routes that matched their Texas or Oklahoma counterparts were renumbered and haven't been restored. (83/132, 102/421, 325/456).

In downtown Los Angeles, the section of the Santa Ana Freeway between the San Bernardino Split and the East Los Angeles Interchange was designated (but not sure if it was ever signed) I-105 from 1964-1968, before being legislatively returned to US 101.

Revive 755

I-255 in Missouri was changed to I-270 around 1974, but changed back to I-255 when the Illinois portion of the loop around St. Louis opened, supposedly due to opposition to changing I-270 between the I-55/I-70 interchange and the I-255 interchange to I-870.
