In Hawaiian, "haiku" is spelled and pronounced as "ha'iku" (Hawaii DOT is inconsistent about including glottal stops on its signs), and means "talk abruptly" rather than the seventeen-syllable form of Japanese poetry.

As the sign illustrates. "u" is a common ending letter for Hawaiian place names. Expect multiple opportunities to show some more love for the "U"s.
