I remembered this picture just a little too late to post on the day of the challenge, so I'll post it now:

The irony would be that IA-163 actually replaced US-163 in 1937.

I'm a little confused on how the challenges come up. Can anyone on the forum come up with a challenge or is that up to the challenge creator?

I am severely late replying to this, but basically, anyone can create a challenge, and they can do so on any day except the day every month that is dedicated to the monthly recap (which is typically two days or so before the last day of that month). Every once in a while, there will be a day that doesn't have a challenge, because no one posted one for that day (but usually someone will be able to come up with one for it afterward, which is usually included in the next monthly recap. The first person to suggest a challenge for a day (except for the monthly recap devotion day, as stated above) makes the challenge for that day (unless it is declared invalid for some reason, such as being a duplicate challenge, or something else). I have the habit of - every once in a while, when I make a challenge for a day - posting right around 12:00 A.M. so that I don't go through all the trouble of making the challenge and the post to no avail for that day. This caused me a little bit of embarrassment when I accidentally, unknowingly did this on a daily recap day for that month, so always know what day you're looking at if you decide to post a challenge.  :)  :-D

That's basically how it works, but other people can continue to elaborate on it if necessary, though this question is now ages old - I just hadn't gotten the chance to reply to it until now.  X-(

I am severely late replying to this, but basically, a lot of words yes.

That wasn't basic at all, so I fixed it for you.   ;-)

I just found out about the "monthly recap" rule, which lets me backtrack to some challenges I missed.

QuoteDecember 2, 2017: Pictures of route markers for routes along unpaved roads.

I have lots of these from Alaska and Canada's Arctic territories.

YT 9, just east of the U.S. border:

AK 11, well north of the Arctic Circle near the Slope Mountain Camp turnoff:

Another marker north of the Arctic Circle, this one from the Dempster Highway in the Northwest Territories:

Challenge: Post road photos that contain no vehicles, signs, buildings, structures, or any other manmade objects other than the road itself.

The metal pipe segment is the only disqualifying feature, so I'll use my photo on hand rather than edit it out. This is from Yukon's Canol Road (YT 6) north of Ross River, a 288-mile round trip full of potholes, and one of the worst roads I've ever driven:

Jim has Pearl Harbor covered, so I'll go with one of several Canadian roads/places including "Harbour".

Dec 4: Post a picture of multiple same-type route shields where the larger digit is listed first (either top to bottom, or left to right)

I actually have one of these.

Taken earlier today.

And I don't know if this counts either but I'll put this here too. (also taken earlier today)
I take pictures of road signs, that's about it.

General rule of thumb: Just stay in the "Traffic Control" section of the forum and you'll be fine.

For me, it has to be something eclipse-related, so I'll go with the welcome sign to the city where we saw the spectacular show.  This is on US 34 entering Grand Island, Nebraska, taken a few hours before the eclipse on August 21.

Photos I post are my own unless otherwise noted.

International Falls, MN  Second time in Minnesota, first time to the Canadian Border.
I drove here after the Twin Cities Road Meet, then drove home trying to track as many old alignments of US 71 as I could.

This was, by far, the largest trip I took in 2017, and the furthest I was from home. (The hills looked more impressive in person, trust me! :))

For me, it certainly has to be something from my time in Iceland back in August. Here's a look down a one-way street in Reykjavík with a pretty nice view down at the bottom:

My best trip this year was two weeks in the Colorado Rockies. I could spend all day driving roads like this. Unfortunately BA lost my baggage on the flight home but I put the memory cards in the carry on so I saved all the dashcam footage.

This could be "top" in more than one way, but certainly not as in "favorite."
Also, it was taken of me by my wife, so I hope the challenge has some wiggle room.

This was at the top of Monarch Pass on the Continental Divide, at the literal high point of our family vacation:  11,312 feet.

It was also the top travel experience because it was figuratively all downhill from there.  It was at this point that I realized I had not replaced the radiator overflow cap before leaving home and we were losing coolant.  So there you see me, creating a makeshift cap out of a tee shirt and duct tape.  The new cap I bought 43 miles later ended up being the wrong one, leaving our car with no pressure (unbeknownst to me at the time), and we overheated a few days later.  Because of that, we never made it to Utah–where I had planned to see a dinosaur tracksite, hike at Arches National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park, swim beneath a waterfall, and visit a ghost town.  We made to 1½ miles from the state line, at the top of John Brown Canyon, before turning around and heading to a mechanic in Grand Junction instead.

Elevation-wise, the pinnacle of my travels this year was my hike to Lassen Peak, in Lassen Volcanic National Park.  God, that was a difficult climb.  You get 97% of the way to the top before you have to start scrambling/using your hands.  This is a view looking down from the top.

I guess I'll go with both...Iowa's tiny route signs above the mile markers:

(They're probably about 3 or 4 inches square.)
