I hesitate to be the thread police, and I didn't start this mini-challenge, but...
Quote from: empirestate on January 19, 2018, 12:46:00 AM

The rules are pretty simple:
...
—The state name cannot be in direct reference to the state itself. Features named after or derived from the state are OK, just not the actual state—so, no "welcome" signs or state line signage. Features unrelated to the state are also good, such as "George Washington Bridge" or "Wyoming County".
...

aren't the Illinois and Indiana examples we just saw both in "direct reference to the state itself"?

The Illinois sign wouldn't be valid if it's in fact directing traffic to the state, and not a community that shares the same name.  My Indiana example should be fine, because that's a separate community in PA, that happens to share the same name as the state.

My bad on the Indiana - should have looked more carefully at the picture, it's obviously PA and you captioned it, too.

No worries -- It made me re-read the rules to make sure that I had interpreted them right.  If US71's photo turns out to be invalid, I'm sure we can find a suitable substitute to fill that in.

The Illinois sign is directing traffic to Illinois Rt 111 off IL 255.

It could also pass for January 24: a picture of a sign where a route is physically spelled out in place of a shield.  :-D

List of states with rivers named analogously:

Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Wisconsin

There's also an Oklahoma River, although I'm guessing that "Oklahoma City" would be a far easier, legal get.

I'm guessing things that reference the state but are not the state itself (something like "Oklahoma Tire Odor Quality Institute") are OK.

QuoteDecember 31, 2017: Post the one road-related picture you took yourself in 2017 that highlights your top travel experience of the year.

Definitely this, which was actually taken on that very day - December 31, 2017 - in the evening. This picture is of California Highway 1 Southbound going on the Bixby Creek Bridge, which is a reinforced concrete open-spandrel arch bridge near Big Sur. This bridge is awesome, and this road is awesome. California Highway 1 is no doubt one of the best roads in the entire country. This was taken on my trip to the San Francisco, CA area around New Years, the switch from 2017 to 2018 (a month ago). We rented a car and drove it up to Napa Valley one day, and then the next day we took it down to Big Sur. Another day we stayed in San Francisco the whole time and toured much of the city. I also got to go on the Golden Gate Bridge (US 101), which was absolutely sweet, and I got some very good documentation (pictures, videos) of it as well! This was definitely an extremely wonderful trip, and this picture showcases the highlight both of it, and by far the entire year of 2017. It was amazing standing in all the glory of this spectacular bridge for about an hour that evening, as the sun went down behind the clouds, feeling the breeze and taking all views in - road-related and natural (mountains, ocean, etc.) alike. This experience was definitely an unbelievably pleasant close to what was, mostly as a whole for me, the worst year of my life. Here is the photo:

Not sure if the whole sign needs to be a purple background to qualify.  If not, here is one of the many examples of the E-ZPass logo on signs.  Maine (obviously), near Augusta.  August 7, 2014.

I have a photo of a sign that says "Purple" (as in Purple Heart Highway). Does that count? ;)

That is correct, looks like from the on-ramp from I-285.  Used to work in Marietta so I've been through here many times.
